so my 3ds' top screen is broken and i have looked everywere for something to swap the screens ouside of ds mode im starting to thinks it impossable

They're not even the same size, even if it was possible it wouldn't work very well.
Replacing the top screen shouldn't be too hard, though.
Which model of 3DS XL is that? I might be able to do the repair for you, I offer a repair service with the thread here.
