Basically turn it into a gaming computer
You just want a bigger 3DS? Could be easily done if you can find a 3DS with a capture card installed. They're no longer being made, so they might be expensive.

Touchscreen support for the lower screen might be difficult to pull off (probably easier to use some variation of InputRedirection with a Raspberry Pi, than to try to connect a larger touchscreen digitizer directly to the 3DS board, you can buy touchscreens that have a separate USB plug for touch that could plug into the Pi, and the HDMI plugs into the capture card, so you still get the direct video feed from the capture card and the touch goes through InputRedirection)
Touch support could also probably be done with a Pi Pico or similar to translate the touch signals to work with the 3DS directly but might require reverse engineering the protocol, if nobody has done so already.

They're still being made, Loopy has one for the n3DS XL and it's still possible to get optimize kits for other models

3ds lacks any ability to be anything more than it is. let alone some sorta viable computer. No, it wont happen.
not even a higher res screen supported by homebrew software, or adding a faster, more powerful chip into the motherboard with the same base coding so the system functions normally?

Or even, an exterior GPU support? (jk)

Sounds like you want a gaming PC in a 3ds shell

The main bottleneck you are gonna run into is size constraints. Look at the steam deck - those components aren't gonna fit in that tiny form factor

That isn't to say it's not possible - your best bet would probably be to somehow use smartphone components in a 3ds shell and basically make a high end phone gaming station inside of a 3ds

Okay wait.
Do you want to use the DS CPU/GPU/motherboard to run a larger device that would run games on larger screens, bigger battery, etc, but still basically a DS?
Or do you want to build a faster computer into the DS casing?
Or are you asking if it's possible to upgrade/overclock the DS to get better performance from the original hardware?

Knowing that 2016 phones can run citra on android pretty feasibly I bet there's already someone making a prototype in a basement somewhere :v

Come to think of it, some of those NUCbox thingies are getting ridiculously small, and one of those motherboards could actually fit into a 3DS shell (with a little trimming, like removing the ethernet ports). The only problem would be the cooling (not much room for the cooler) and battery life (the standard DS battery would give you... five minutes?).

Replace the screens with something more serviceable and you're onto something.

Why would someone go through all that trouble, you ask?
