IP addresses are like phone numbers. Each one is a different house/place.

Yea but why two formats?

There isn't two different formats. Each example you listed has 4 blocks of numbers for IPv4. Each of those blocks can have up to three numbers in them each, they don't have to.

I mean when I go on CMD and type ipconfig, I get this as my IP Address:

192.168.1.121

But when I go on ipchicken.com, I get this as my IP Address:

67.80.156.236

What is the difference?

nothing's the difference (except for the values
rolleyes.gif
)

you have 4 blocks, divided by .
each block goes from 0 to 255

you could write them as 192.168.001.121 and 067.080.156.236, but why would you?

the 192 address is your LAN IP address
the 67 address is your external IP address

I find it funny and ironic that your usertitle is "1337 h4x0r f0r t3h w1nz".

But yea, when looking up your IP adress from a website, it gets your external IP, all trafic goes through that IP, to your router, and then your router brings it to your local IP.
The local IP, the 192 one, is also the one you can use, when for example, connecting with other computers in your network.

Thanks for providing us with info on how to connect to your comp! Shouldn't post you IP publicly.

One is external, one is internal (of your network).

A router will block all incoming connections by default, thus the need to port forward in order to host things.

There is an issue if his router's control panel is accessible from the internet, but so far that's only been known of one router (SMC8014), and it was such a big security flaw it made news sites, it's most definitely not normal at all.

Hell, if somebody views a thread I posted in I can get their IP address (or the IP of the proxy they're using, if they're using one), 'cause they'll have viewed my signature, so their browser's request for the image will be logged by my site.

In fact, here's one person that viewed this thread.

Code:
145.97.232.233 - - [16/Mar/2010:02:29:34 -0500] "GET /sigs/me/gba/signature.gif HTTP/1.1" 200 1455 "http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=214178" "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; nl; rv:1.9.1.8) Gecko/20100202 Firefox/3.5.8"

Whoever it is, they're in Utrecht, the Netherlands, and I suggest they update to firefox 3.6.

However, none of that gives me any access to their computer or personal data. The only place an IP and person data are linked is through the ISP, and an ISP is not going to give out a customer's personal info unless an gent of the government or police force is requesting it.

windows firewall can be taken down remotely quite easily if someone has your public ip address. That is a common mistake people who donlt do pen testing believe. Your anti-virus can also be easily avoided, by using crypting techniques. I am a network engineer/ pen tester and you would be in better shape if you realized that there is no such thing as security. You can make it harder for an attacker, but you cannot make it impossible.

believe what you want, but there are many exploits for windows and linux that are readily available and updated daily. As long as you have an internet connection, you can be attacked.

plus, you're probably not a great "hacker". The best hackers remain anonymous and do not tell you what they do.
