Microsoft to introduce monthly playtime limits on their cloud gaming, additional time to be purchasable from the Xbox Store

Announced a few days ago, Microsoft is set to introduce some fairly significant changes for fans of their cloud gaming service. Set to go live in November, these changes will restrict the number of hours you can play based on your chosen Game Pass tier. You can find a breakdown of the upcoming limits below:
  • Game Pass Ultimate: 15 hours
  • Game Pass Premium: 10 hours
  • Game Pass Essential: 5 hours
On top of these base numbers, players will be able to buy additional time directly via the Xbox Store. It's worth mentioning here that you won't need a subscription to do so, opening the service up to those outside of Game Pass for the first time. These changes come on the back of rising costs, with the official press release stating these changes are only likely to impact 4% of their active users.

According to reports online, some users are receiving emails to say these changes won't affect them while their current subscription remains active. It is not currently known whether this will be the case globally, though subscribers in Australia, Poland, and Brazil seem to have come forward so far with confirmation.

Microsoft aren't the first to introduce this type of cap to their streaming services, with Nvidia's GeForce Now having had similar measures go into effect at the start of the year. At the time of writing, GeForce Now limits users to a total of 100 hours of playtime each month (excluding those on the Founders plan), with up to 15 of those carrying over to the following month.

This is beyond parody. Like..... A month? A week MAYBE would make sense. But a month? 5 hours? 15 hours? A MONTH? WHO thought this would be a good idea. Are they actually fucking retarded?

I just think its funny that everybody here is complaining/ whining about this when "these changes are only likely to impact 4% of their active users." People will bitch and cry about anything nowdays, I swear. I bet the majority of these comments come from users whom don't even Xbox or Gamepass, but still gotta whine.

See this is why you shouldn't support digital, like how microsoft can just change its service instantly without any say.

Gone from saying you'll get all xbox first party games as day one.

Then back tracks, now only if we say

Cloud gaming included

Now you have to pay extra

Ohh well, soon gaming will exit digital only and itll go stream only and you truly wont own anything.

i should have known they had something up their sleeves after all the "we are still physical" taunting to sony now they pull this absolutely atrocious bullshit I've ever heard in my entire fucking life!! :rofl2:

FUCK CLOUD GAMING!!!!
fr, i feel like there's always a catch and it was only a matter of time

Rich people being greedy with the thing you allowed them to control? Noooo...

#PhysicalForever
Calls himself the backup master
Misses the entire point

See this is why you shouldn't support digital
Physical is digital.

The distribution method is completely irrelevant, ESPECIALLY here. This isn't even about games that were distributed, they were streamed.

Support online* game purchases that don't fuck over the customer.

Me: gaming on Mac.
GBATemp: What??? How???
Me: Forza Horizon 6.
GBATemp: WTF!!! I don't realize about release on Mac. How?

GBATemp: You are fucking pathetic.
Me: Fine, I threw Mac out of window.
GBATemp: :rofl2::rofl2::rofl2:

and everyone says "why to get an xbox?" because of gamepass...but now it's a complete waste of time and money! you will pay absurd amounts to trial and like it! watch their gamepass subscriptions drop by 50% after this and this places mic at first place in the race to kill their brand between them and sony now

Xbox you were doing so good, what the fuck?
Everything you needed to know about how much Xbox gives a shit about their fans happened during the shitshow that was the X25 preorder. A console marketed towards long time Xbox fans and they not only could put requirements up to buy one like Nintendo and Steam, but had their site crash out and literally take the units OUT OF THE CART DURING CHECKOUT. No apologies. No making it right for long time Xbox players like I was. Nothing.

They don’t give a fuck about their fans or their history.

They just want money.

Loyalty is fucking dead to them.

reminds me of my friend in the 90's arcade era, who approach me and say :
what if i the customers instead of inserting coins, play's with a time limit...
he done it in his arcade/ps1/pc game's shop room and it was revolutionary at the time.

it's the end i guess, xbox had the chance to do good in regard of sony decisions but it's Micro$oft they never had a major good decision.

Yeah nah fuck cloud gaming; input delay, absolutely wrecks ISP data plans (especially mobile data, if used on the go - why would you, though?), you don't even get to download game data files, no mod support, a game can be removed at the cloud provider's desire.

Who cares if playtime limits are introduced, if no-one plays on it to begin with? I'm a Steamer; I don't have my head in the Cloud, so to speak.

It's the AI craze. They want to prioritize data centers for their microslop and for that they need to reserve and squeeze every tiny bit of space and energy for it. Probably would have even halted the service all together if they could.

Not gonna lie when I read the limits I assumed it was per day and that seemed pretty reasonable. Then I realized this is per month. What are they smoking?

I think "XBAWX mommy" is loosing it. Guess putting someone in office that barely knows the history of her own department and the market at large signifies asinine decisions.
