At a time where I'm losing ideas on what games to play (or review, depending on such) due to college taking up most of my time, I've been thinking of revisiting a form that I've asked some people previously to fill out for some suggestions on what games to play. And I'm going to be doing it again for the people here on this site.

Feel free to say them in the comments as well.

Anything but Visual Novels and (slightly FPSses)
I'm enjoying Planet of Lana 2 atm. Also just pick up Legacy of Kain Defiance Remastered, Scott Pilgrim EX and City Hunter.
Dragon Quest 7 Re is also great fun if you're into JRPG. I'm not really an FPS guy but I did have a blast with Indiana Jones and the great circle.

I'll recommend several:

Rats...and here I was going to recommend "Doom: the visual novel" :P

Anyhow...I'm mostly into indie games, so here's a random selection (with note: I'm usually playing low-quality platformers/puzzlers on steam deck)...

VVVVVV
celeste
stealth bastard deluxe
void stranger
UFO 51
Öoo (yes, that's its full name)
animal well
islands of sea & sky
mo:astray
Inversus
Patrick's parabox

EDIT: okay, okay...I'm not much of a fan of visual novels, but I WILL absolutely recommend "slay the princess". If Stanley parable was your cup of tea...this is that done even better.

College definitely makes it harder to keep up with new games, so I think revisiting the form is a great idea. I’d suggest checking out a mix of shorter indie games and a few overlooked older titles rather than only focusing on big releases. There are plenty of games that can provide enough content for a review without requiring dozens of hours to finish. I’ll definitely consider leaving some recommendations in the comments too. Hopefully you get a good variety of suggestions from everyone here and discover a few games that you wouldn’t normally come across.

oh mah goodness, I completely forgotten that I had a thread for people on the temp recommending me games lol. I took the link above off my website since I knew I wasn't going to follow through it.

Anyways, let's see how much games were recommended ever since my last message:
This has always been a game that I thought about playing way back when it was popular (and when the smash styled fighting game Fraymakers made it relevant again), but I don't have the finances to get it. You're going to see this constantly for these games, but maybe someday I will get them if I do.
I already have this and finished it :D
void stranger
Seems like a cool game to try out; I checked my Backloggd and I already have this as listed as a game that I want to play in the future. I did not know this game was made by the developers of ZeroRanger which is amazing. The titles sound similar LOL
It's actually UFO 50, but this is yet another one that I really wish to play sometime in the future if I have the finances.

Even if I have stated that I don't like Visual Novels, I don't get good vibes from this game. Could be a me thing though.
Xenogears
See Void Stranger lol (minus the same developer thingy)
The Mega Man Zero series (1 is kinda rough though)
I played the second one, however I don't know if I would return to these games. I love watching them though, whether it's a TAS or a Longplay. Same thing w/ any other Mega Man series.
The Messenger
Same thing as Void Stranger LOL

If you're still taking recommendations try these:

Thief 1 and 2.
Sonic Adventure 1 and 2.
Touhou 8: Imperishable Night.
Tales of Symphonia.
Metal Slug 3.
Xenoblade 1, 2 and 3.
The House of the Dead 2.
Diamonds and More Diamonds.
F-Zero GX.
Super Monkey Ball.

Seiken densetsu 3
Breath of fire 3 & 4
Sword or Mana
Final Fantasy Tactics A2
Star Ocean 3
Star Ocean 2 (Not the PS1 version)
What a bunch of JRPGs that you've reccomend! I'm not much of a JRPG player myself, but I'll look into the following. I saw that you've mentioned Trials of Mana, and I remember at some point that being a game that I played with a friend. I'm not friends w/ them anymore, but I had good times w/ them. (They weren't bad, it was just a lack of activity on our ends). Why no PS1 SO2 though)

More great games. Touhou is one series that, despite me being a avid fan of shmups, is horrified of any Touhou game that gets mentioned. I have played Gradius, Salamander, and Hazelnut Hex (baby's first Bullet Hell), but I don't know about Touhou.

I do have SA1 on Steam but not SA2 and I've been always wishing to get that after I get Valerie just like most of the other games I've been trying to get with the same money on Steam

Xenoblade is an ARPG that I thought of trying someday; I have the Wii instalment but not the rest.

F-Zero GX is one that I also have and played but shelevd, "

and I have countless hours on Super Monkey Ball.

It's a lot of fun, the bullet patterns are really interesting, in general I don't think the Touhou games are any more difficult than your average bullet hell shooter, your hitbox is quite small, and if you get hit you can quickly use a bomb to save yourself.

Xenoblade is an ARPG that I thought of trying someday; I have the Wii instalment but not the rest.
The first one is my favorite, I played the Wii version too, aside from the lower resolution, I prefer the looks of the Wii version over the Switch one, but whichever you play is a blast.

I really encourage you to give it another shot, it's one of the hardest games I've played, but it's very rewarding. And it's similar to Melee in a way, where you can learn the intended mechanics and beat the game successfully, but there's a higher skill ceiling if you're interested in really mastering it.

It has a chance to crash after every battle due to a bug, this can affect your playtime alot when you're inside a dungeon that's lengthy or just got done grinding levels, etc. Other than that from what I understand the other bugs this version has are non issues.

(I could not find a bug fix rom hack at all anywhere, I believe the only rom hack it has is an undub)

But if you're not bothered by random crashes, I say go for it, that version is definitely one of the better ones in terms of sound design and visuals imo.

VVVVV is 5 bucks full price and regularly goes on sale for 1.24 euro. But I get it...it used to be in every humble bundle back in the days. :P

Anyway...some other gems I've found (not gonna list price on everything, though)

Love eternal. Tough-as-nails one-screen platforms you just WANT to beat (it reminds me of celeste in that way) with jumping and VVVVV-like gravity shifting. Very weird storyline that I can't decide is either random or deep on a level I can't comprehend.

Mina the hollower: this is like a gameboy color platformer style game with winks to the old Zelda games. This is probably known since it's made by the shovel knight crew.

Pipistrello and the cursed yoyo: in the style of the gameboy advance. Less known (I think), but I like this one better. It captures the more quirky and loosey nature of those games.

Nurikabe world: recommended it elsewhere and I think @hippy dave got it because of it. Anyway...this is a chill "connect the ponds" pure puzzle game. By the numbers, but: BUTLOADS of levels, good visuals, great handling, and a good difficulty progression

Froggy hates snow: saw it, pirated it...and then bought it. This is full on casual game: you start in a warm tent in the snow, and need to get in the snow to dig it flat. Collect resources, upgrade your abilities, collect keys, defeat waves of enemies, and finally unlock extra powers. It's somewhat roguelike-ish (and, granted, repetitive if you keep playing), but it's so casual that it's better to just see it as individual games.

(Wilmot works it out). this is the cosiest of cosy games I think I've ever played. You're a smiling square who has an abonnement on a puzzle magazine. Meaning: for every jigsaw puzzle you complete, the postman brings more. If you've played Wilmot's warehouse, you know the controls. It's fun, it's chill...but those puzzles get downright unfair somewhere down the line.

Cairn: i'm not sure how many mountain climbing games there are, but this one takes a strong contender in being the best one. Think CLOP or octodad, but instead of a silly slapstick game, you have to carefully position your hands and legs on rocks in order to secure yourself. And I have to say: this game makes me scared of heights (note: unlike the previous entries, you need more than a potato PC to run this thing)
