Stuff Needed:
-
Usearch.dat - The file we'll be working on.
-
Unitbase spreadsheet in short name alphabetical order - Where you're going to get the translated names from.
-
HexCmp2 - The program where you'll edit the Usearch.dat
________________________________
Got everything? Awesome. Now let's get to work!
- Install HexCmp2.
- Use Excel or something like that to open UnitbaseAZ.xls .
- Use HexCmp2 to open usearch.dat . You should get a window like this:

Okay, now that you got your workstation ready let's get to work.
Like I said before, since we don't have any kind of Google Docs or anything of the sort we will have to define which person does what from the get to go.
For starters, I'm going to do the first 100 lines. What does that mean exactly? Well, let's see.
- Open UnitbaseAZ.xls and look at the line 100: Ted Autumn Autumn -> Akihito Byakko Byakko
- Now look at HexCmp2 and find this name. We can find this name in line 1370, meaning, I'm going to translate till this point.
- Some of the characters in the UnitbaseAZ.xls don't appear in the usearch.dat so don't worry about it.
Now, the important part, how to edit this thing, it's very simple, don't worry:
I suggest manual editing (aka typing), it's much faster and less troublesome!
- The names appear in the usearch.dat like in the unitbase.dat, meaning, Short Name*line of dots*Full Name.
- Lookup the name you want to translate in the usearch.dat and put the cursor on the first letter of the short name.

- Write the short name (
Image Link). If the JP name is bigger than the ENG name then there is nothing to worry. If the JP is shorter than the ENG name then we have to do a special step.
- (
"If the JP name is shorter" step) If the name is shorter than the ENG name (
Image Link) you will have to edit in the numbers.
- Find the corresponding number for the first letter.
Image Link
- Input "00" in those number till the rest of the word disappear.

- Repeat the process to the Full Name. Don't forget, follow the order in the Unitbase.xls, first name
FIRST!
Since we're doing each one a part we will have to save in blocks, meaning, if you are doing, for example 101-200 lines and 250-300 lines you will work each section in a different usearch.dat. It will be much easier then to "glue" them together.
- So, if you're, for example, doing lines 101-200 you should rename your file: usearch101-200.dat
After that you can post it here on the topic or simply send it to me using PM.
And that's it, can't be more simple than that.
