How to use 64 GB + SDXC Cards with 3ds

I don't know if this was a problem for anyone else but it was VERY confusing for me so I will make a simple Guide.

  1. Download MiniTool Partition Wizard, install it
  2. Plug in your SDXC into the computer
  3. Choose your card (BE VERY CAREFUL YOU PICK THE RIGHT ONE!) and delete its partition
  4. Create a new partition in the unallocated space "Create As: Primary", "File Sytem: FAT32", and "Cluster Size: 32kb" (Make sure your drive has a letter name)
  5. Hit ok, then apply in the top left
  6. Test it in your 3ds
  7. Make sure to transfer your data if you haven't already;)

Hell why easy when it can be done complicated, no? Download guiformat, it's standalone, doesn't need to be installed and does literally nothing else than format something to fat32. But just for the glory of Satan I can assure you that it also works with that partition wizard, did it myself with that, but it's too much effort when guiformat essentially does the same and needs no setup.

ok i went for it, windows is reading it as 59.6 gb that is normal i assume
also i assume i can use windows to formatt it right? it's just that windoes won't partition fat32 over 32 gb but it still formatt over that size fat32 partitions?

You can't use Windows to format sdxc to fat32. It'll only offer exfat and that won't work in your 3ds.

oh ok i thought that once i used this tool to partition it it would format it just not set the partition to fat 32
No no its all done, guiformats only purpose is to format stuff to fat32 so it's basically ideal for 3ds card formatting, being that you want to format something larger than 32gb.

it says 488,365 blocks
now if i only i could remember how much a block is
also i wonder if i should have just injected my emunand 1st before putting the card in the N3ds or if matters
EDIT
ok block to GB formula i found is
1gb = 8,192 blocks

so 59.6 x 9,192 = 488,243.2

and i got 499,365 so pretty spot on

Are you transferring old data from another card to a new card? Or setting up a fresh card?

well i have 4 gig card in my N3ds now with GW emunand setup on 9.5 but i am going to leave that for GW cart use and i don't really care about any installed cia's
i also have a emunand.bin backup on my PC of 9.5 emunand
so i guess now i will just use emunand inject tool to inject that to the card
i plan on trying to setup rxtools on this 64gb card
so i guess i can try to inject the GW 9.5 emunand to it, then just put the GW launcher on it and see if it's working then go about setting it up for rxtools to use the already injected GW emunand partition

Yup, just inject that emunand backup on your new microSD and copy the files over.
Or you could also start completely over and just create a new emunand. Probably is about the same amount of effort. Just follow my tutorial (see signature) and you'll be completely up and running with rxTools

yes somone sent me this pack with all the files, SN easy rx, but it's for US N3ds i used it on a friends N3dsxl US
but mine is a EU model
but i think it should be ok since i am not using the DG files and emunand update files that came in it and i wont be using the inject H&S cia installer ill just use my GW to install a cia installer, not sure if the inject cia installer to H&S is region specific but i assume it is, but besides that i think everyhting else is safe and not region specific

HS injection needs to be done individually anyway on N3DS, you can't use the prepared files in rxTools, that doesn't work. You need decrypt9 and dump your own H&S, then inject FBI into that and install it again, done. Is linked in the FAQ of my tutorial.

But yeah, if Gateway allows cia installation, just install FBI.cia or another tool you like

  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.

  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
