How do you UNLOCK stuff!!? i got to the harbour level, the i was quickly steamrolled. what do i need to achieve to get some unlockables?

Beat the game. Then you get Challenge Mode.

There are 40 challenges, and you get a new unlockable every 4-5 challenges beaten.
