Its against posting links to a site where you can download games. I dont see why discussing piracy would be against the rules.

you don't see how posting links to pirated goods is the same as telling someone how to pirate goods themselves? in both cases, you're allowing the person to acquire pirated materials. they're exactly the same thing.

I think being for or against piracy on this type of forum is a bit silly, don't you? As long as there isn't direct links to sites and files then realistically there is no need to close it unless people start trolling and doing other things to constantly break the rules. It looks clean to me.

GBATemp is only against getting stomped on by the uncaring establishment and industry.

This site has NEVER been 'against' piracy, it just won't hand you the files on a platter.

i'm just trying to understand the site's stance. if this thread is okay, links should be okay. that's what it boils down to. detailed instructions on how to pirate something is about the same as handing out a link. both cases will get the site "stomped" on.

Go up to a cop and ask him if saying "smoke weed" is the same thing as handing somebody weed.

See what he says.

Posting links is like pointing them out to your favorite drug dealer. So yea, if you go tell a cop where the guy you buy your meth from is currently beating on his kids, he would probably take issue with it.

I cannot believe someone does not know how to pirate PC games. It is way easier then pirating consoles and handhelds.
That depends on the system... for example by the time I got into the dreamcast most games were self-boot, all I had to do was burn a disc with a certain program and play it in the system.

no, your analogy is screwed up. if someone asks for a link to pirated goods, it's akin to someone asking for a joint. but we don't give out joints. so instead, that same person asks how to make a joint, and you give him detailed instructions on how to do it. what do you honestly think this person is going to do?

with your attempt at an analogy, you're telling the OP to "smoke weed," and he's saying "I will, just show me how first." which makes my case, and not yours.

it's just that the site's official stance with regards to piracy is fuzzy at best, and i don't see this being so different from actually handing out links. so to me, links and this thread are okay or links and this thread are not okay.

sure, everyone here winks and nods, but this site itself needs to make its stance clear. that's all i'm saying.

Honestly, I can't understand what you're saying.

The official stance is that this site will not host or link to anything illegal or pirated.

And yeah people will want to try to bend the rules and toss out blatent hints and stuff... and find their posts modded if a mod sees it.

If I was Nintendo, this site would already be dead. There likely is some form of legal defense that while idiotic, is still functionally 'useful'.

I mean, you have to have seen the disclaimers on the sites that offer file transfering services 'Oh you should not be using this service for bad things'. What a total crock.

But the ultimate best lunacy I have ever seen out there, has to be when pirate groups admonish you to buy the game if you like it, AFTER empowering you to steal the game effectively speaking via their offered download release. And they compound the craziness by demanding you not give away their nfo files

I've bought more games because of piracy than I ever normally would have bought.

Also, what Rydian said. There's nothing even remotely illegal about this site. Especially since it doesn't even allow links to pirated goods.

How exactly would you do that?

Please give all sorts of details and make sure to quote relevant laws.

Heheheheh laws, he expects me to use laws, that is fucking hilarious.

No, I'd 'pressure' whomever is providing the site into 'conveniently' being unable to privide the service any longer.

You guys need to live a few more years I suppose to be able to comprehend that winning doesn't need to have anything to do with fair or legal.

I wonder how much money the owners of GBATemp have, vs the Nintendo company's bank account. Or the people that provide this site.
I wonder how long this site would be here, if someone just decided to find the owner, and make 'bad' things happen to their friends and family.

Yep entirely 'wrong' but, who said life was anything to do with always being 'right'?

Quote relevant law he says, how utterly naive.

The only reason GBATemp exists, is Nintendo just doesn't give a fuck enough to care. Cost of doing business I suppose. Might even call the site a bizarre form of free advertising. Seeing as we blather about them all day long for free.
