I was curious, is it possible to block some URLs so that 3DS can't see the updates when online as an alternative to turning off the wifi entirely, just for home use obviously.

Anyone has any idea what the servers/urls are?

I suppose it's as easy as update emunand while using wireshark to see the traffic. Maybe it's even documented on 3dsbrew

Get a WiFi adapter that's capable of working in access point mode, http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-WN823N-Mini-Sized-One-Button-10-4-10-8/dp/B0088TKTY2 for example.
Install firewall that asks for your permission on every connection attempt from any program on your PC.
Connect 3DS to your AP and wait for firewall prompts, log every address and allow/deny on your discretion.
Post the list of discovered servers on GBAtemp :)

The 3DBrew site I believe has the Nintendo Master Server IP on it.
Just blacklist that IP on the router.

Yeah only problem with this is it would also block eShop and all other Nintendo stuff. I think he just wants the IP for the update server.... which probably won't be easy to find.

I'm blocking Nintendo update servers for a long time in my router, never had a problem, i recently added the new one to, so here's what i block:

- nus.cdn.shop.wii.com
- nus.wup.shop.nintendo.net
- nus.cdn.wup.shop.nintendo.net
- nus.cdn.c.shop.nintendowifi.net
- nus.c.shop.nintendowifi.net
- ecs.c.shop.nintendowifi.net
- cp3s-auth.c.shop.nintendowifi.net
- cas.c.shop.nintendowifi.net
- a248.e.akamai.net
- c.shop.nintendowifi.net
- cbvc.cdn.nintendo.net

So yesterday evening before going to sleep, i put my N3DS in sleep mode, like i always do to recieve some streetpasses from my spillpass, this morning i open up the N3DS (Like i always do) but was greeted with the update notice :/
It's for the first time i get that since i block the update websites and use spillpass v2 on my Raspberry Pi Model B
Anyone know of more servers that where added?

I am using OPENDNS to block 3 or 4 urls.

Router is pointed at opendns servers, opendns is configured to block specific DNS entries.

if you are using your router to block only URLs it won't work for HTTPS queries to those sites since HTTPS is end to end encrypted and the router won't know. You have to block the DNS queries so the IP address is never obtained.

When I get home if I remember I will share my list of blocked domains. Note I have been blocking since the day the browser blocking update was annoiced and I have not gotten a system update notice or browser update notice since. But it hasn't been that many days yet so YMMV until it gets more validation.

Note: eshop still works fine with the following blocked domains.

---
Do this first to remove any current updates pending:
Completely power off your system.
Boot in recovery mode (press L+R+A+?+Power, hold the first four about 1 second, more won't hurt the system but only your fingers... ;))
It will ask you as usual to update. However, it will take a little longer for the screen to come up compared to the speed it would have had if you didn't already have an update.
If you click yes, the update will be completely redownloaded then installed...
If you click no, it will power off and you'll go home free!
---

--edit--
nus.cdn.c.shop.nintendowifi.net (http) (Where the update content is hosted)
nus.c.shop.nintendowifi.net (https) (Where updates are checked)
cbvc.cdn.nintendo.net (browserhax blocking)

--edit--
doing this on an N3DS XL USA 10.1 connected to the internet through homepass on router and through normal wifi.

Did you really need to post in a thread that hasn't been active in 11 months!?

Creating a new thread would have been the way to go.

Are you using a new3DS or an old3DS?

I've just read that new3DS users can no longer access eShop after recent maintenance.

Yeah i did need to post in here :)
What's the use to post a new thread about something that's already mentioned in here and ppl can find still usefull info in here.
So it fits to do so :)
I disagree. But I guess it doesn't really matter. :)

Good thing I'm getting an O3DS XL and not the N3DS XL. I want Gateway to work on all firmwares and not limited to 9.5.

Ah yes it's a N3DS who did it, BUT i just accessed eShop on my N3DS with the esho spoofer from *Hax 2.5 and it worked perfectly.
Also the recent server maintenance was only for US eShop, the European version had the maintenance somewhere early october
anyway, i got rid of it by pressing L+R+A+D-pad UP and pressing power to access the recovery menu

I just have everything Nintendo blocked on my router for my 3DS's Static IP. That's probably unneeded, though, since I don't leave it in sleep mode or leave the wireless on when I'm not using it.

N3DS 10.1, but my post predates the maintenance. I have not tried since the maintenance has completed.

FYI, eshop still works fine for me YAY!

You guys had me worried.
