Rather than just inserting new text, it would involve editing all the pictures that makes up the story.
That's what makes it fun.
During the Korean Dungeon Maker/ Master of the Monster Lair (I think) translation, I was responsible for all the graphics.
All it involved was using photoshop, downloading fonts that fit the style, and I had to mimic the original picture.

Now a good example would be this, where bunch of graphic text was translated in TWEWY:

The graphic format isn't too complicated. Standard NSCR+NCGR+NCLR with LZ77 compression.
just curious, is there a program that can apply the map file to the NCGR?
because what I've been doing so far was creating an NARC file with the palette/map/graphic so I can apply the map with the graphic on crystaltile..
Can you tell how to do that? I don't know how narc files works... I tried to use an hex editor to group the palette, map and graphic in a file, but this didn't work ¬¬

I could see someone translating the mission names, but the storyboard really isn't too important. Maybe the options or modes in multi-player, but it wouldn't be worth it.

lol, Going through the ROM I found some txt files that sound like the story.

????????????????
?????????????!

is in data/data/rom/mb_btl_dsc.txt

cheap Google translation makes it sound like the story, not sure though.

The team wanted to split the ship reinforcement
KISOUBESHI assistance to the farmer!

Also. how do you install japanese/chinese and text like that, copying into firefox doesn't help, just takes too long.

i can view it in a hex editor, but still, these are txt file :s

Even though the game really isn't much story driven and doesn't require much knowledge of japanese in order to be playable, it always struck me as odd as to why no one cared about translating it. Heck, I'm the kind of gamer that mostly values gameplay above all things, but I always thought the game would look more polished and would fell like - let's say, "a better experience" if we could get the whole understanding of what's goin' on, no matter how silly some of the stories might be.

Guess that's what I get for playing Elite Beat Agents (5 minutes) before Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan for the first time.

thanks
i'm trouble with the nscr file estructure
offset : value
00~08 : 52 43 53 4E FF FE 00 01 24
09: ??
0A~14: 00 00 10 00 01 00 4E 52 43 53 14
15: ?? ( i think it is = offset 09)
16~17: 00 00
18: WidthBMP % 256
19: WidthBMP / 256 - ((WidthBMP % 256)/256)
1A: HeightBMP % 256
1B: Height / 256 - ((WidthBMP % 256)/256)
1C~23: ??
24~eof: MAP?

I made an program based on n2bmp that convert nscr, nclr, ncgr to bmp, but some bytes on these files are unused on bmp, i don't know what I put in this places

i haven't studied the ncgr file estructure yet.

Edit:do some lz77 uncompressor that works diretcly to extracted file? I got some erros extracting ouendan2 files exists ?->ex: data\2d\bg\budevver.nscr

sry for my english

u32 magic number (should be 5243534E)
u16 byte order mark (should be FFFE or FEFF)
u16 unknown
u32 file size
u16 header size (should always be the same)
u16 number of chunks

SCRN chunk:
u32 magic number (should be 4E524353)
u32 size of entire chunk
u16 width
u16 height
u32 unknown
u32 size of map (should be equal to entire size - header size)

As for the actual map, each entry consists of 2 bytes (16 bits):
AAAABCDDDDDDDDDD
A = which palette to use from the NCLR (0-15)
B = vertical flip
C = horizontal flip
D = index of tile to use from the NCGR

Don't know as many for that one, but here's what I have:

NCGR file:
u32 magic number (should be 5247434E)
u16 byte order mark (should be FFFE or FEFF)
u16 unknown
u32 file size
u16 header size (should always be the same)
u16 number of chunks

CHAR chunk:
u32 magic number (should be 52414843)
u32 size of entire chunk
u16 unknown 1
u16 unknown 2
u32 format (3=4bpp, 4=8bpp)
u32 unknown 3
u32 unknown 4
u32 size of tiles section
u32 unknown 5

Then the data for each tile is just indexed colors one after another, going across and then down the tile. Which palette is used depends on the NSCR data.

Not sure what CPOS is for.

thanks again
i will try to convert bmp->ncgr,nclr,nscr later

Edit: about nclr, can this file be the palete of 2 or more files?

I actually think the game is more fun without knowing what's going on. I've made up some pretty stupid/absurd stories for what's going on, not to say that the originals weren't both to begin with.

Searching the web I found in GameFAQs your translation guides for these great games, and in Cracked Rabbit Gaming I found an abandoned protect of making a translated manga out of this game. I wanted to finish the job using your translation guide and the screenshot available in the project site but I don't want to start working on it without your permission. Of course you would have full attribution of your translation job.

Thank you.

Hi there,

Sorry for the late reply; been really busy this week. You have my permission to work on the project as long as I'm given credit for the translations. : ) Actually, someone else has e-mailed me about starting a similar project and he has the first stage done. His name is Eric and his e-mail is [email protected], so perhaps you two can work together on it. I just wanted to mention that someone else was working on something similar just in case.

If you need any help, let me know. : )

Seaching the web I find a complete translation guide of the game made by somebody under the nickname of Ouendan_fangirl. These are located here:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recogniti...432.html?type=1

I wanted to use them for the protect, but the link to he Raw Screenshots is broken and wasn't able to find it nor the forum post.

I would start editing the images as soon as I get in contact with Ouendan_fangirl, but I would still I need the screenshots.

I was hopping if you could give me a hand, may be you still have the files somewhere in your hard drive?

Thanks.

I actually JUST deleted the original video files because I had to clear up space on my HD. I pretty much gave up on the translation project anyway, but it's nice to know there's a text guide out there.

Sorry

Well because its Ouendan, it's not that hard to play the game you know! You also got to look at it that the USA got the EBA which is nothing like Ouendan!
