I have a DSi, and maybe I can clear some of this channel stuff up.
The DSi, like the Wii, has a Channel System.
The Wii has 4 pages of 4x3 channels, totaling 48 channels, 5 of them are built into the firmware, leaving 43 blank channels.
While the DSi has a single horizontal row of 39, with 7 channels included in the firmware (Settings, DS Game, Camera, Sound, Download Play, Shop and Pictochat) leaving 32 blank channels which can be filled with DSiware games and apps. So a Homebrew Channel would not be an unreasonable possibility, and therefore, not an unreasonable term to use.
However, that said, I don't mean to say that it is a given to get something like that loaded onto a DSi. There still needs to be a way to be found to run unsecured code. And somebody to actually make said channel.
