Im considering to get a Wii where the Disc-drive doesnt work anymore and modding it in such a way, that i can load Wii and GC Games from an SD card or USB-HDD.

Now i found that only Firmware versions up to 4.3 appear to be hackable.

Are there any newer revisions that i couldnt hack using the letterbox method?
Since without a functional disc drive, this hack would appear to be the only viable way to do this. (as far as my extremely limited knowledge of such a thing goes)

Is there anything i should look out for? Any Advice or Warnings?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thank you very much in advance.

What about playing games?

Is there such a thing as loaders who load games from a hard drive/sd card?

and are there any limitations to such an idea?

Yes there are. USB loading is near perfect and works with most games without tweaks or adjustments. Do note that same games will, so be sure to check out the compatibility list in the Wiki section of GBATemp.

Find Modmii in the Hacking section and it will help set up every little thing you need.

The only limitation is that loading Gamecube games from a USB drive is still kind of buggy due to extremely heavy development. Oh, and if the game uses streaming audio you won't be able to hear the music and/or sound effects. Wii games work nearly perfectly now including IOS reloaders like the previously unplayable CSI games (yes, they finally got a working IOS reload fix).

@SylverReZ, I dislike the kind of drm where you have to play single player games online all the time bc of some verification bs

@Xdqwerty, Don't use games that have Easy Anti-Cheat as its been exploited many times.

@SylverReZ, I also heard one of the Prince of Persia games was so unfinished that it required the "24/7 online" drm so a puzzle could be done and the game could be finished. And that when the Ubisoft servers were closed the (cracked) game was impossible to finish or something like that
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, That's extra scummy. Ubisoft nowadays ship out incomplete games like Skull and Bones which was being worked on for nearly a decade now.

@SylverReZ, i think they have been doing that since late 2000s

Either that or their old games were unfinished aswell but we can't notice it

I like that games can be fixed after the fact, hate that it's being abused via beta tests... And DLC... I was a 7800 owner back in the day and loved Impossible Mission, turns out I couldn't beat it because it was actually impossible lol

I never knew about it at the time but a fixed version was available but you had to mail in your broken copy lol
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
So that version is semi rare
