Hacking Gateway Question not in FAQ

With the Gateway can you still play retail carts, or does the game (I.E Zelda)make you upgrade to the new firmware, like is it one or the other?

No, Any game which you can't play with Gateway you won't be able to play as a retail cart. The reason being is that it will still ask for the firmware update.

OP - you can still play retail carts as long as the game does not require anything greater than SM 4.5.x-x. Anything else would need to be played on the Gateway, which may or may not be able to support the game (such as some of the newer games, which don't work)

BTW: To play retail cards you cant be in gateway mode

This may change with emunand, if it ever releases. Though at that point might as well play the rom.

Anyway, I wish they'd get some way to play Zelda on 4.5, I want to play it, I dont' mind buying it retail, but I don't want to lose potential future hacks FOREVER.

Not at the moment, no. With 2.0, it should be possible.
