Save for a few Homebrew titles, a 3rd party GameCube controller adapter won't do anything on the vWii. Is there some way I can make it work via modding?

Well, what did you expect? :P Wii titles must bring their own controller drivers, most of them don't support USB at all except the internal bluetooth card, and builtin GC ports are fundamentally different from any USB accessory)

It is theoretically possible (see the GC to Wiimote custom IOSes for actual Wiis) but it would have to be done basically from scratch... and you can buy a Wii with factory-fitted GC ports for a fair price right now :) (or, if the game supports classic controllers, the GC-shaped Classics)
