How I got backups working:
(from official firmware 3.55)
Install Kmeaw custom firmware
Install multiMAN 1.13

With multiMAN 1.13 there's no need for the lv2 package as it's already built in.

Install Kmeaw CFW the same way you would official firmware:
Download file and place PS3UPDAT.PUP on your USB drive in "PS3\UPDATE\".
Download multiMAN 1.13 and place the .pkg file in the root of your USB drive.
Go to System Update and install from your USB drive.
After installing, go to the game tab, choose "Install Package Files" and install multiMAN.

If multiMAN freezes, try unplugging your PS3.
All backups I've tested work. Some require you to delete any previous game data, load specifically from external or internal, or have a disc inserted.
Blu-ray video works when not using multiMAN. If it doesn't work, load multiMAN and hit triangle.

it froze, i have a phat ps3, what do i have to do to make it work?

i also tried gaia manager, it works but when i press home button to get out the ps3 freezes

There's a new version of multiman now. 1.13.01.
Maybe it fixes the freezing?

I think it had to do with the version of Kmeaw's Lv2 patch that was being used in the backup managers.
