Hey,
I recently found my old 3DS which i installed homebrew and fbi on last year. When i turned it on it said:

An error has occurred:
Failed to apply 1 Firm patch(es).
Press any button to shutdown.

I took out the sd card to find the problem but when i put it inside of my pc and opened it up it was empty.
I found a fix for the problem but it wont work as long as i dont have the data from my sd card..
So, i logged on here to find someone who could help me.
Thanks a lot!
(Sorry for my bad english im from germany xD)
Kiriyo.

CFW on 3ds Requires the SD card to boot into cfw, it runs off the Emunand and not the Sysnand

Seriously, Emunand is not needed anymore for the average user.

@Kiriyo
Depending on the Luma version you have to do different things. In the best case you need just the latest boot.firm to start again. As I'm lazy today, I don't feel like repeating everything again. See here: https://gbatemp.net/threads/n3ds-xl-tried-to-update-and-now-its-stuck.526337/#post-8431840
If this link does not answer your question/solve your problem, ask again and describe your problem as good as possible.

If you're also lazy and do not want to download all files individually to restore the complete setup, get the "CFW starter kit" from this post after you are sure about having the latest version of B9S.

I am having the same problem. I followed all the steps outlined above, but it still is giving me the error.
However, my system (old 2ds) will sometimes give me the error Failed to mount SD card and CTRNAND, or no error message whatsoever. If you could help, it would be greatly appreciated.

An error has occurred:

Unable to mount CTRNAND or load the CTRNAND FIRM
.
Please use an external one.

Press any button to shutdown

For this error, repair the 3DS firmware + custom firmware with CTRTransfer (Type D9) - CTRTransfer. Carefully read and follow the Instructions.
