My New 3DS XL with hacked firmware just attempted to update and now it's stuck on this screen when booting up: "An error has occurred: Failed to apply 1 FIRM patch(es). Press any button to shutdown"

What do I do now? Is my 3DS just bricked because I updated it and shouldn't have?
You did not search for that message, did you? No it's not bricked. Press "Select" while booting to see what Luma version you have:
  • If it is 7.0.5 or older, you still have arm9loaderhax and need to update to boot9strap like explained on the guide: https://3ds.hacks.guide/a9lh-to-b9s
  • Version 7.1 can indicate you have an older version B9S. In this case update to the latest version of B9S. Again, the guide: https://3ds.hacks.guide/updating-b9s
  • Version 8.0 or higher means you have B9S version 1.2 or 1.3. In this case replace the boot.firm in the root of your micro-SD with the one from the latest release. If necessary, also update GodMode9 and copy the new boot.firm to the NAND as fail safe mechanism.

Your system is most likely not bricked.

What version of Luma CFW were you on before you updated? And what firmware version were you on before you updated?

It looks like I'm running Luma3DS version 8.1.1. I don't know what firmware version I was on though.

Thanks for the help, now I can get back to playing Pokemon.

EDIT: I think I messed something up as now my 3DS won't power on at all, it just turns off instantly upon pressing the power button. However if I remove the SD card it powers on normally.

EDIT 2: Never mind, I reinserted the SD card and magically everything's fine.
