Anonymous once said "don't worry, we are from the internet" and while I am from the internet I am the equivalent of one of those jungle tribes, albeit one with cool shit, that occasionally suffers outside invasion; the extent of my commenting/foruming on the internet is three forums, one of which is practically dead, and I otherwise have no social media or mobile phone or anything like that.

The latest outside assault seems to be the term "shitposting" which I had not heard of prior to maybe 4 months ago (my perception is time is somewhat warped these days so that might be some point within the last year, definitely not longer ago).
Where did it come from, why did it supplant previous perfectly functional terms (spam, nonsense, idiot posting...) and will it be going away?
I tried to find an answer for the former but came up short. The other two I care less about, mainly as evolution of language and others have and others haven't so who knows are the answers there.

There have always been cretins that mistake the enter key for the delete one (they are right next to each other), or maybe they just have an advanced case of fat finger syndrome, but describing it using the label of shitposting is new.

Why do you Internetters get so worked up? You're Anonymous. You've made up 1% of the Internet.
Stop trolling at each other.
You know, and you keep saying, 'I'm from the Internet.' Well you know what dude, everyone has an Internet connection in their house, that doesn't make you cool.

Do what now? Am I a member of a group now? I only wanted to know the origins of a term that was new to me.

Edit. Anyway I did some minor research, which is to say I searched usenet text groups. Problematic as I am not sure how representative they are.

Well over 95% of the posts here by the collective constitute Shit Posting. It's regurgitated, unexamined

An interesting earlier example, though it could just be hyphenation.

It's been around in Australia ever since postal services existed, hence why we're the best shitposters. The second we got mail the first thing we did was write compete and utter shit to our neighbour, hell I'm pretty sure the first guy to do it took a literal shit into an envelope. It became just one of those terms people just know from there on out.

what is this
I was attempting to discern the origin of the term "shitposting", such a field of study being called etymology.
I did this as I lead a fairly sheltered internet life, though it has been a long one, and it was a term new to me. For the most part the opening post was written in my general preferred term for such things, that being cynicism and apathy which hopefully lead to a bit of humour.
I did initially neglect to include a question mark in the title, apologies if you got that version and skipped the opening post itself.

I later did a search on usenet text groups, them being some of the longest running discussion groups on the internet and fairly representative of the much of internet culture at times, even though not so many people know of them today. This was done to see if that would enlighten me further. Since then I was informed that it might be Australian slang, this was new but despite a broad familiarity with antipodean English linguistics down to the slang level (I even have a tea towel with it on) I had somehow missed that. Thus far I have not checked to see what it actually is and whether the usage was a precursor to this, the hyphenated variety or parallel evolution of features, much less what precipitated its rise in usage on the internet over the last short period. For other terms I have sites like http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/foul-bachelor-frog but attempts at this were cursory at best and revealed not a lot of great merit.

Thus you now have an answer for "what is this", I however still have more things to look at.

I've heard the term shitposting for years now. Don't know how you hadn't heard of it sooner. While I'm not sure of its original origin, I think it probably came from 4chan like 90% of the internet's terminology. It may have also come from reddit.

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Or when your player dies, you can say in code, if enemy exists, do nothing, but if enemy does not exist, then create enemy at certain spot. (This would be a pain tho for lots of emeies)

Easiest, simple way would be just restart scene, but player would restart from beginning.
