Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth "Dragoon" trailer

Atlus has announced that their latest entry in the Etrian Oddysey series will be getting a limited launch edition in the west when it releases later this fall. It will come with a 24 page artbook, a 6 track CD, and a box that encases it all in. A new trailer for one of the classes in the game was also released to go with this announcement. It covers the "Dragoon" class, which appears to be a front line tank compared to other classes offered in the game. Atlus will also be holding a streaming event on Twitch, broadcasting gameplay footage of all the previous games in the series weekly, leading up to an event on September 15.

Only played Persona Q which has a similar battle system to this. I MAY have to pick one of these up for cheap one day.

Which one do people recommend for noobs?

It's not just a similar battle system, Persona Q is actually a crossover game, using Etrian Odyssey's entire game engine with Persona characters. If you liked that game, then you'll like the Etrian Odyssey series.

Currently, there's five games in the series (This one being the fifth, and not out yet). The first three games are on the Nintendo DS, and the fourth one is the first game on the 3DS, though the first two games have remakes also on the 3DS. Those two remakes might be the best ones to try and pick up, though four isn't bad either, I don't recommend the originals on the DS, they haven't aged as well (except the third game, which is considered by many to be the best in the series and worth picking up anyway). Those remakes are Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl, and Etrian Odyssey Untold 2: The Fafnir Knight. As long as you don't try to play the original two on the DS, any of them are fine for beginners to jump into, none of them are chronologically linked to one another, they're all their own separate game.

Cool, I remember playing the demo for 2 when I first bought the 3DS XL and really liked it, but never got to play any. I might play 4, since it looks like it has some character customization, I believe.

That must have been the remake of 2, Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight. The two Untold games aren't just remakes of their respective games, they also feature an alternative mode of playing, Story mode, which takes out the character creation and adds a more in depth story with actual designed characters you control as. The games also still retain the ability to play Classic mode, where you create your own characters and play the more limited version of the original story. So as long as you play any of them, you'll have character customization if you want it, Untold 1, Untold 2, and 4 are all good choices for the 3DS.

I still remember my experience with the first. How getting destroyed by the first rat or rabbit I encountered which made me realise that this game was not gonna hold my hand thru it, and that was such a great sense of challenge. However I eventually discovered that the game was preeeetty long and there was a lot of backtracking. Still finished it, but I'd say the first 20-30 hours were the most fun. I wonder if they changed this up in the remake. I also seem to remember reading an interview with the creator saying that he made it for plays of 15/30 mins duration each sitting, not hours upon hours as I did.

Anyways the music was so great. As a matter of fact I still listen to it, like the battle track when you get further into the game. It's called "Destruction Begets Decay" if I'm not mistaken. The design, the atmosphere and the gameplay were all great. I really want to play another one and the fifth might be it.

I highly suggest you stick with untold series if you like Untold 2. Untold series not just a remake but also remaster of the series with many change to fit more casual player. EO4 and this are along the main series line, and since I hadn't play this yet so I can't tell but EO4 was make before Untold series with many thing hadn't been fix (like fast travel to entrance or dynamic mapping) so I suggest skip EO4 for now.

There's been like 3 releases hasn't there? IV, untold and untold 2. Either way I'm glad it's coming to the west. I've been playing the JPN version.

I don't understand how I can enjoy Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey and Unchained Blades but dislike Etrian Odyssey. I just can't get into this series. The characters look cute. The progression is similar, but I just cannot connect with it.

I came here all excited because it's the first time I heard the word "Dragoon" for a long, long time. I was imagining a next chapter or a remaster of the original "The legend of dragoons" on PSX and already was daydreaming the good old times playing that gem...

Then I saw it was Etrian Odyssey, and wrote this post. It's still really cool and all, but a little part of me is sad now.

Must have it. Must have it all.
(Quote with the avatar picture) Calm down! I want the game too but you don't have to crazy over it.
Seriously though. I'm probably in the top 10% who's waiting for this game to come out to play it. U1 is the only one one I haven't played yet as well as only getting a little bit in to Etrian Mystery Dungeon before I lost it (It's like the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games but, you know, EO style). I can't wait enough for this game to come and have fond memories of playing through each of the games (usually with a team from a guide but I became more independent from doing so as time went on).
The early 3ds games does come with paid dlc but the newest ones uses free QR codes for in-game bonus (which I never received since my 3ds crashed if it tryed to use camera).

  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
