When I try to drag and drop a game into DSFCC, I get an error:

"Cannot open file "". The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect."

Any way around this? I think it's something to do with games not in the database but is there a way of DSFCC adding the game to my list anyway and then updating the relevant data when the new release list is updated?

If it can't add it because it's not in the list it actually pops up a message saying "Not in release list, can't add". It sounds more like it could be a corrupt archive file or something similar. Try unpacking the file manually and see if it's ok. If it is try copying the file into the folder the file explorer is set to and using the scan button to add it. If that doesn't work then let me know. I'll have a look at the code later to see if I can see what can be causing it though. What release number is it and what format is the archive in that you're dropping in?

"3795 - Jagged Alliance (US).nds" is the filename, already unpacked and I've had this with quite a few roms unfortunately. Trying to select the rom in the file explorer panel and using the "Scan files and add to library" appears to do something as it says it's adding it for a few seconds but nothing happens after that. Quite odd. Could it be anything to do with the folder names/length?

Also happening with "ind-canp.nds" as well.

Hmmm, that is odd. I haven't come across the problem myself. What's the full name of the path that they're in? I can try and replicate it here then.

"Processing file D:\Downloads\alt.binaries.nintendo.ds\3795 - Jagged Alliance (US).nds"

There you go

Also, if there is an error with adding a file through the drop method, is there a way of removing that entry from the to-do list? As after that error, trying another file doesn't work as it still attempts to add the top entry.

As I typed that, I've just tried moving the files to the root of my drive and that didn't work either. Just tried another rom (Anno - A New World) and the same error with that too.

Edit: Just tried to click the Anno rom and "Scan into library" and that worked for that rom, although the drop didn't. JA won't add regardless of dropping or scanning though.

Hmm, that's a bit weird. My path is longer then that for the files I drop in so it can't be tat, and like you said it's doingit from the root as well. I wonder if it's something to do with them being unpacked. I might have broken the code during an update or something, I keep all my stuff archived when I drop it in. I'll have a look tomorrow, I'm too knackered tonight. Have you tried dropping them in as a zip/rar/7z file?

I'll ladd a remove from list button into the drag and drop processor as well, shouldn't be too difficult.

"Processing file D:\Downloads\alt.binaries.nintendo.ds\3795 - Jagged Alliance (US).rar
No details for this game are in the NDS database, skipping..."

Seems to be a problem with unpacked roms then?

Nice one, that makes it easier to suss the problem out!

Cheers for the heads up on the bug, I'll get it fixed tomorrow. Gotta go in and sign on the dole cos I'm off the sick now but when I get back I'll fix the problem. PM me your email address if you don't mind, I can send you the fixed version to test and then upload it as an automatic update when I know it's working on your end.

On another note, and this could be me being lazy and not researching, but when adding a game to your library does it copy that rom to another folder or does the library point to the location where it was added from?

If you use drag and drop then it copies the file to the folder the file explorer is pointing to, if you use the scan button it leaves it where it is and the library just points to it.

I have just stumbled on this thread and have a question. What are peoples thoughts on using this over Rominator. Rominator is no longer getting updates and is defunct, so is this any good?

Hank's trying to arrange for someone to be able to do the database updates so you should still be able to carry on using Rominator.

its a shame hank never got it to update from an official list or something.

The AdvanceScene dats don't contain enough info in the file to be able to use it properly for a good rom manager. It doesn't contain stuff like genre so you've got to maintain your own release list.

Hold on a moment TrollyDave, I have just realised your the one that wrote DSFCC. Well done, I have just tried it out and I think it does everything that I want, at least all of the features that I use in Rominator, yours seem to have as well. You also seem to have Genre in it as well???

I maintain my own database as well! I keep a database for R4 Commander and then merge it with the AdvanceScene dat for DSFCC.

When a game isn't in the release list yet, can the Drop processor still copy the rom into my roms folder and maybe set DSFCC to add that rom into a queue, then check to see if that rom has data in the latest release list when you next load DSFCC and update?

Makes it easier to keep all of my roms in one spot rather than keep them in their downloaded folder and only be able to copy them in when the list is updated

!#!?#%!#@ DSFCC just broke every single ROM I was trying to copy over from my PC to my new microSDHC card. I couldn't fit everything on the card, so I selected all but 3. Those 3 are the only ones intact. Everything else looks like this:

Previous to attempting to copy this over, these were all intact zips with the .nds file inside. Needless to say, I'm really annoyed. The only message DSFCC gave me was "error unzipping file" or something along those lines for every single game it deleted. Luckily, it chose not to delete my saves, but wow that's a huge pain in the ass.

I don't see how it's possible for DSFCC to do that to the zip files while copying them across to the card. All it does is simply unzip them using the windows zip library, it does nothing to the internal of the archive itself. It doesn't unpack them to the MicroSD card either, it unpacks them onto the hard drive first.

Have you run out of space on the hard disk? Also, how did you copy them over, using the Game Library or File Explorer? If I were you I'd run a scandisk on your hard drive to check for corruptions as well. Like I said, as DSFCC doesn't actually do any writing to the zip file, it's just a simple unpack call, I don't see how it could cause it to trash all of the zip files. I'll definitely look into it though. What version of Vista are you using?

Sorry it took so long to reply. That is the Windows 7 release candidate (7100) though I can't imagine that'd be affecting the unzipping. And yeah, what happened didn't make sense to me either, but it had to have been DSFCC because it only happened on games I tried copying over. I did it via the File Explorer, not the Game Library. The only thing I can really think of that could've caused the issue is that the games were on a UNC network share because I remember having slight issues with that in the past, though nothing like this before. I definitely had enough free space, on my laptop running DSFCC, the memory card, and even on the server. I ended up just using drag and drop after getting all of my games back, it's a great program but since I'm not sure what happened I just don't want to risk it again.

looks good so far but it needs a way to remove missing files from the database and it would be nice if it was M3real/sakura friendly. depending on how things go i may change from rominator to this
