I'm surprised how utterly shameless this game was at imitating Layton; the graphic style, the soundtrack, the atmosphere, it's like someone just said "yeah, let's remake one of those". The bonus puzzles are a bit of a cop out too, in a lot of them you just end up doing the same puzzle over and over with different pictures on top. As for the hints I think there's too many hint points, I've been using them to skip the boring "Where's Wally" levels without really thinking about the cost. Hint 1 is always useless, and hint 2 often gives too much away. Music games, actually I don't mind most of those, but there's a few where you can't tell the difference between the melody you're supposed to play and the backing track which is kinda annoying.
All that said, at the end of the day it is a collection of puzzles and if you like puzzles you'll probably like this. But it's definitely inferior to the Layton series, and the repetitive puzzles will get boring if you try to play through it too quickly.
