Sometimes I'm too lazy to take out the cartridge while playing a digital download game. Can I just leave it in the system, or will it continuously gobble up my battery while I'm not using it?
Does it even affect the battery life at all?

Solution
It will draw a small standby current for sure. It's similar to how flashcarts will drain the battery faster even if not used. But original games are much more efficient compared with the power hogging, FPGA based flashcarts.
