You don't have to open to find out, though you're going to have to open it to hack it, so might as well.

http://www.360drives.com/howto has a nice guide to the basic IDing of drives. You do have to open it to tell truly what firmware version and other such is might be although you can use the database on the site above to hopefully land you with a good guess but this is only important for hitachi and liteon drives with the former not really mattering until it comes time to flash it (liteons do have extra hardware needed in most cases).

I do have a lite-on, and iv looked at this guide, I think i just need to know what firmware I have so i guess il just have to open it.

theres a sticker under the front of my xbox i can take it off right?

You can, but that means Microsoft won't repair your console for any price or any reason anytime in the future.

If you prefer a bit of time with a hair dryer will allow you to lift the sticker from it without damaging it for later restoration.
