Hacking Ditthering Images (Skins With Gradients)

Hey everyone, ive designed a skin with a slow gradient and the menu screen's dont seem to like it. moonshell displays the bmp fine though. Does anyone know the best way to make the image look right? Or is it simply becuase the number of colours we can use on the R4 menu's are limited?
