So today I got an email from NISA since I'm subscribed to their newsletter, and to my surprise, it was an announcement for Disgaea to the DS..

Anyone else looking forward to this?

Hello everyone!

So, are you still excited from the Disgaea 3 news? Hope your heart is strong enough for more exciting news.

Today, March 7, we have confirmed that Disgaea will be coming out for the Nintendo DS this summer.

Disgaea DS is a port of Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness for PSP, so it has an Etna mode and multiplayer mode as well. This DS version has an option to play with the stylus. Also, there will be a grid map on the top screen, so you can strategize even better!

I have the PS2 version, but haven't really got time to play it. I have heard many good things about it though, so I will definitely get this, portability is always a pro.

I'm definitely looking forward to it. From what I've read, it supposed to be a port of the first Disgaea game, which I haven't played. This will give me a chance to see what all the hoopla is about.

Sigh, this will not be a proper Disgaea experience as they will probably cut out all voice acting.

I enjoyed video games plenty before they began adding voice-overs and having big productions. I'm not too concerned in that respect.

Well I've never played any Disgaea games, so the lack of voiceacting won't really matter.
This is also a good way for many people to get into the game.
Portable wins!

If you've actually played one of the Disgaea games; the voice-overs are probably the most important part of the game.

Why? Does it reveal some hidden meaning the text cannot convey?

Most of the game is about listening to their whimsical voices, they have a huge library of funny sayings that you really don't get by reading them. Especially the sarcastic tones.

This is really true, 3/4 of the conversations just wouldn't be funny without the voices.

Basically, yes. Disgaea has great gameplay and writing, but a lot of the humor is in the character's deliveries. For instance, each of Disgaea's chapters ends with a hilarious 'next episode preview' (as if it were a TV show or anime); those wouldn't really be the same without the voices.

I still recommend this, mind you (unless they totally screw up the port, which seems unlikely), but it's a pity to lose the voice-overs for this game in particular.

I think the fact that Disgaea is a comedy contributes to this... in other games, when characters are just spouting random generic RPG cliches about dragons and princesses, I'd almost rather not have voices, but comedy depends a lot on timing, so a comedy game like Disgaea really benefits more from voice acting than most of the rest of what's out there.

And, yeah, it won't be the same without hearing the Prinnies shout "PRINNY, DOOD!" when they attack...

Well, I wouldn't write off the voice work just yet, at least not completely. It might not feature everything that may have been in the original game, but Atlus also published Luminous Arc, which featured quite a bit of voice work. A lot more DS games are adding voice work, too. If it's a port, which it is, it's probable to have at least some of what was there originally.

I agree about not being too quick about writing off voices in the game. DS games can be fairly large in size nowadays and the PS2 games weren't all that big that I remember.

That said, game isn't out yet, newsletter was saying Summer so we'll see how it goes, I will definately be playing it, I like playing on the DS, just hard to find games you like playing for long periods of times

PS2 games are large, especially the DVD9 games. (There are only a few PS2CD games)

The original Disgaea disk is about 3.8 GB when I put in my drive.
