If you want to format the SD card for optimum reliability and speed do not use windows!

This free formatter from panasonic (especially for SD cards) has solved a lot of issues I have had with Kingston cards, if you have problems with hanging, freezing try using this

http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/sd/d..._formatter.html

Software Description
This software formats SD Memory Card and SDHC Memory Card(SD/SDHC Memory Card) using a formatting program that complies with the SD Memory Card specification SD formatting provides quick and easy access to the SD Memory Card.

Generally, SD/SDHC Memory Card file systems formatted with generic operating system formatting software do not comply with the SD Memory Card specification.

Your microSD or microSDHC card usually comes preformatted, so there is usually no need to format it right out of the box.

If you have to reformat it, FAT16 (sometimes just called "FAT") is generally preferable for microSD cards because it's faster. For higher-capacity microSDHC cards, you don't have a choice (you have to use FAT32).

It's also recommended that you use the Panasonic formatter as Kittymat suggests.
