How we cover AI-assisted projects - GBAtemp community check-in

GBAtemp Banner.png

It’s about that time of year again where I check in with the community to see if we can get the front page aligned with what people are interested in knowing and what people are interested in talking about. As the title might have given away, there’s one topic more hot than most at the moment, and that’s AI.

I am a C++ developer by trade, and my place of employ has just started to roll out Claude licences for those interested, so the topic of AI assisted programming is very much on my mind. I’m not just going to go out there and say “AI bad”. I don’t necessarily think it’s a productive conversation to have. The reality is that we’re going to see more projects that make use of it in some form, and some are likely to warrant attention.

Going forwards, I think it’s important that we highlight when projects we do feature make use of AI, and to what extent if such information is available. My hope is that this will strike a reasonable balance of being able to share projects that might look interesting, and giving people who want to avoid AI related projects a simple indicator.

Obviously not every project is going to be so open with their usage, and we have no intention of starting witch hunts by deep diving code and looking for em dashes in the comments. The aim here is to make whatever public information there is accessible for people reading here, and just make things a touch clearer for the people who are looking for that kind of disclaimer.

With that aside though, I am interested to know what the general consensus is among the user base. Are you open to playing ports assisted by AI if it’s the only port available, or happens to offer something unique? Do you draw the line at vibe coding, or do you avoid any project that has Claude listed as a contributor? We sadly don’t have access to polls on the front page any more, but I will make sure to keep up with any replies as they come in.

Yes, just as long as it is mentioned that Ai was used, I'm ok with it.
Ai has been in games for many years already technically, NPC's are essentially Ai to some form.
NPCs are Ai but not generative AI
We love and support A.I vibe coding!
Who's we?

In the future, please mark whether a project uses generative ai. I support human work and human results. Not machine coded garbage

AI bad is the most dumbest thing of the century! and here we are telling people its time to police and moderate and enforce Ai assisted projects this reads like you are saying AI assisted projects aren't allowed to exist. when in reality indeed they are allowed to exist just as any aother project. I am gonna be real and very clear with you. AI is a tool like picking up a pen. its about how its used not what people think about it. is it used for evil or is it used for good. to call it not productive is a perception and we can clearly disregard that. because you are assuming that you have the position of a king and you think you can tell people what is productive and what is not. and I am here to tell you you may get a crowd of anti ai haters that will support you but dont let that fool you into thinking everyone supports this. because not everyone does. and I am gonna give you a stern reminder that AI is here to stay. i remember how people responded to the introduction of DLC and how much they hated it. guess what! they didn't hate it enough when they went into the digital stores to open up their wallet and spend their money on that sweet sweet DLC slop! so, go ahead act like the person who thinks they can deem AI as not productive go ahead and act like you speak for everyone when its obvious you dont. NOT EVERYONE SHARES YOUR ETHICS. there is nothing ethical in the statement AI bad. and all your gonna do is stifle creativity.

AI bad is a meaningless useless message that signals to the intelligent thinkers yeah I am gonna tune this out.

further more this is going to be a hot take but i think people do not deserve the "privilege" of any kind of indicator that a project was made by AI. Because I have seen how the insufferable respond to it. It is used as a permission structure to bully people who do not deserve to be bothered over nonsense! AI disclosure is a privilege! and the most emotional and irrational of human beings have squandered the value of AI disclosure.

The best way to introduce AI into projects is to let the people be ignorant of its useage that way they cant bitch and moan because nobody needs to hear it.

Whether AI is used or not it doesn't matter.

It only matters if it looks good and works for what is supposed to be.

If you're making AI your enemy, you're in for a world of pain. AI is here to stay and resisting is futile.

also think about this if we refused to disclose AI to people which would benefit us all. It would actually do one of two things. either prove that people who say they can spot AI are wrong or correct. as AI continues to get better take for example. the small instances in games where ai was used in assets but not the whole damn world. THEY HAD TO LOOK REALLY HARD FOR THAT! but how are they going to keep up that skill if it keeps getting better? hmm? I say we dont disclose it. this forces people like that to work extra hard therefore heightening their awareness to it or watching that skillset become irrelevant when even they are finally forced to admit they cant tell the difference. it would be far better to not disclose it. since we dont deserve it anymore.

Ai is going to become a piece of tech that becomes apart of our daily lives just like the modern car replaced the horse and wagon. its an industrial revolution. so, its here to stay. AI disclosure and check-ins will be meaningless once humanity adapts to its existence.

the reason why I say we don't deserve AI disclosure is because of poor taste immature human responses to its disclosure. Are you going to be responsible with knowledge and just avoid the product? or are you going to be an irrational and emotional toxic insufferable prick harassing innocent devs who value their time and who don't deserve to be bothered by you devs who may also not share your ethical values. its also rude to assume that they do share your values to begin with. So, its about the human response to it that I do not like or support.

Reporting the existence of these projects is not endorsing them. I don’t think we need to be at all concerned with AI use unless doing actual reviews or sponsored bits. I think AI assisted projects should declare their use at a minimum, but whether they do or not should not preclude them from a headline.

why? why should they declare it? its their choice to use it. and if you think about it. If say they do disclose it. That should be seen as respectable and very humbling of them to do so. n fact they should be praised for disclosing it because they could have chosen not too at all.

however, i have not seen people in social media look at things from this enlightened perspective. instead its quite the opposite.
and I think by building platforms that have people in it grouping together discussing the idea of ai disclosure and check-ins in order to eventually force them to disclose it because they will have too if this is accomplished I think this very discussion is toxic and it looks bad on us as people and reveals our true character and we're our priorities lie. when in reality it doesn't matter. They should be able to choose to disclose it on their own. its their project their choice.

This is fine, it's not like I'd avoid reporting on a project because they don't say whether or not they use AI. My larger point was that if such a disclosure does exist, I'd make sure it's clear on the post. That's all really. I also wanted to use this post as a general vibe check towards the use of AI in these kinds of projects. Regular front page posts tend to attract the same people saying the same things, so it's good to hear from a wider audience now and then.

ngl, you took my take rather well. I tend to say things that I think most people probably should hear but are too afraid to say themselves because of the voices who scream the loudest on this matter. I apologize if I may have misread any part of your post. there is a reason why I left X. and i needed to protect my own sanity. but whenever I see these kind of topics I feel like I need to throw a wrench in the crowd before the crowd poisons the well. I will most likely get banned probably or harassed myself for having an unfavorable opinion towards AI. but if I do so be it. all i see if i lose my account here is you guys only gave me a vacation HAHAHA!

While you may or may not avoid reporting on it because AI was used, I think the starting topic if this thread is itself dishonest. While I'm grateful to see that GBATemp is finally having the conversation, GBATemp has been suppressing coverage of anything knowingly using AI.

I used to read GBATemp daily for over a decade. I've stopped almost entirely know because I see plainly I'm not getting the real news anymore, but a curated agenda.

As Beware said above, reporting on something is not endorsing it. Yet the editorials have clearly shown GBATemp's team treats it as such.

It honestly depends on how AI is used. Personally I feel it can help analyzing why code you wrote doesn't behave as you expected, but it can sometimes also provide interesting ideas to approach a certain topic that you may not have thought about. Basically a supplementary use. Generating some skeletons here and there is still alright in my book, but it becomes a different story when someone pretty much vibe codes all the way, generating most of the code purely based on AI prompts.
