CURRENT STATE: EMAILS ARE WORKING FINE
Hello,
this thread is created to inform our visitors and members about the current state of e-mail notifications & sending.
historically we've always had issues with sending emails, here's why.
we're a big site and we send an enormous amount of emails, all automatic though:
- account validation, password recovery, login verification...
- notifications to watched threads and forums
- notification of private messages
- direct email contact through the site
The problems that occur are that standard email providers refuse to service us because of the volume of emails we send.
Therefore we sometimes find ourselves blocked without warning and emails cease to be sent for a period of time.
This is what happened yesterday for example, I am trying to unblock our site at our current email provider.
You might ask... why not run your own email server? We have tried this in the past and failed for several reasons:
1) it is hard to build up reputation when you start from scratch, so by default emails sent from our own servers are always treated as spam
2) it is complicated technically to maintain an email server (unless you use Microsft Exchange which costs a good deal of money, and you need a windows server for that), the software generally used is called 'postfix' and it's a bitch to configure
3) every time we change servers, and we tend to do that a lot, it requires us to start over, and let me tell you reconfiguring an email server is extremely time consuming, it's almost as much time as starting from scratch
As of the time of writing this post I have switched to another email provider so notifications should be going through fine.
Some emails are still on hold at our former provider, I hope they "release" them soon (if that is the case the emails will leave all at once).
