Hacking CompleteSoftmodGuide Question

Hey guys!
I'm new to the hacking scene and I have a 4.2U Wii, but does it still need to be updated like the guide says? And if so, can I use the Simple Update instead of the complete update?

Follow the guide, just skip the 4.2 update portion, thats all.........

You can skip the update completely or use the simple update to get a patched system menu IOS. Your choice
