ROM Hack Can someone explain to me the basics of patching?

Sorry, haven't been big on the DS homebrew scene for awhile.

Anyway, with the release of Pokemon SoulSilver, I've decided it's bout damn time I learned how to patch, mainly to enjoy a classic I loved during my childhood remade.

So, would someone kindly explain the programs I need to get rid of the anti piracy measures? And use a translation patch?
