I'd only say such a thing, to ensure and guarantee a stateside/english release. Otherwise, the developer can make whatever they want...Western style or Japanese style, as long as it gets localized...

Aww.. I was hoping for the battle system to be more like Tales of Phantasia.. or the Tales games in general... =P

This isn't a Japanese game, or a clone of a Japanese game ...

Why do people want Western games to just be clones of Japanese games?

by the looks of the graphics and everything, it pretty much looks like one.

Well the developers say it IS inspired by Chronos Trigger/Man series so it is meant to look like a Japanese RPG, not a bad thing at least it isn't animé, there are too many games that follow that style and I want more variety.

I think its really bad that people are badmouthing a game they've not played just because it looks "old". Its their intention, get the fuck over it! Either play it or don't, there is a choice you know.

Looks to me that it is pretty much a clone of a Japanese game... follows a lot of the same styles, I think. Not that there's anything wrong with that...

Though, I don't think people don't want Western games to be "clones" of Japanese games, they just want more games that are in the "style" of Japanese games. Look at all the notable games Western developers have made -- GTA, Halo, God of War, etc. Compare that to things like The World Ends With You, Final Fantasy, Mario, etc. Very different. "Western" and "Japanese" games are pretty much their own genres. Personally, I just want to see more Western developers take on that style of game development.

good post.

Japanese developers have set the bar so high for console RPGs that of course there will be some influences/"clones" from J-RPGs in "western" RPGs.

Vice versa, western developers have set the bar extremely high on FPshooters like Halo and counterstrike and PC games like starcraft and WoW that if japanese developers were to attempt to produce these genres of games, there would be definite influences/"clones" if they wanted to put out a successful game.

i think most ppl that are complaining about the graphics are probably in their teens still and aren't nostalgic of the classics (chrono trigger, FFII, etc.), while the ppl who are excited want to play something like the old day SNES haha

i'm excited for this one

I wouldn't think so, although it's a western developed RPG, the style and genre it's aiming for is definately the 'j-rpg'/'console-rpg' . .

I don' care much for graphics, I still play NES, SuperNES, ect games because they are fun, not because they are packed full of eye candy. Storyline for the win.

Oh I'm in my teens (seventeens) and I don't mind the graphics, cause as it was mentioned before, reminds a lot the beloved Chrono Trigger.
Though really, the fugly solid beige on the top screen is a major turn-off. The translucent textbox kinda compensates for it though =p
I wonder if the battlesystem is similar to CT as well?

The top screen thing looks like something they did real quick, the game itself was finished a couple years back for GBA. Hoping that they could maybe work on it some more, sort the text and colour on the top screen.

Though a lot of places are listing this for a June 17th release, though the official website just says TBA 2008.
