What exactly do you want to do? Installing custom firmware?
In this case refer to the guide: https://3ds.hacks.guide/
The best flashcart you can get easily is the R4i Gold 3DS Plus. No "timebomb" (wood kernel), very good ROM compatibility and internal switch for ntrboot/DS-game mode – no need to flash manually.
But for installing CFW you do not need a flashcart – updating to 11.9 and using Seedminer (Fredtool) works without. For playing DS games without flashcart there is TWiLight Menu++.
Good luck in any case.
You can do both: Install with flashcart (ntrboot) is slightly easier and ntrboot can be used to repair even the worst software damage (softbricks do not occur unless you do stupid things on purpose and ignore big red warnings)installing CFW is so I can go all digital with my physical collection on an sd card right?
Dang didn't know I didn't need a flashcart! I can go digital with my physical DS collection too?
flashcarts are.. just for loading ROMs? thanks
I skimmed that guide a bit ago but thought it said I needed one

Both have advantages and disadvantages but both are very usable.
- ROM compatibility for DS (not 3DS) games is still the best with flashcart.
- TWiLight Menu++ is slightly more work setting up (newer ROMs need to be patched because of anti-piracy "features")
You can start without flashcart and if you are not satisfied with the results – I suggest getting the R4i Gold 3DS Plus.
Why don't you update to 11.9 and use Seedminer? Seedminer requires the latest firmware because the eShop refuses to work on everything else.but I can do cfw without soldering on 11.6-11.8? Or nah? Whats the method name if its solder-less?

Is there any specific reason to stay on lower firmware? This has no benefits I can think of.
11.4-11.8 have no public software-only exploits. ntrboot (with flashcart) or hardmod(with soldering – no recommended) are the only ways for these versions.
Just take your time and read the guide from the beginning to the end. It is long – because it is a very easy step-by-step guide.Good to know! I have just been too paranoid to update haha
and 'seedminer' is this solder less? or I need a flashcart for cfw regardless? sorry for confusion but I'm new to this

*miner is a family of exploits for the DS(i)-mode. No soldering. No flashcart.
Assuming your device is US version (judging from the flag on your member profile) you would have to read these pages:

So if I want 3ds cfw side of things, I need flashcart ?
nope. it comes down to a DSiware is how you hack your 3DS. for all things.
Doesn't matter if you do it before or after - you only have to format as FAT32 then copy and paste files to use a different card. Also don't use the video to install CFW, only follow the guide. If the video tells you to do something different and you get stuck we won't be able to help at all. We can only help if you follow the guide. Thanks!
I watched a video too how to do it, seems pretty easy just lengthy
Is it ok if I upgrade my sd card first? do I want to opt for 64 or 128?
And I have never upgraded an sd card even stock, just throw it in there and format it from 3ds or format fat32 + copy and paste contents of current SD card first?
I appreciate it

Try adding a second, older version of GodMode9 in the payloads folder (give it a different name) and see if that helps. Some other people have had the same issue https://gbatemp.net/threads/godmode9-wont-boot-up.537666/
Yes you can use GodMode9 to format your new card then copy and paste the files over (best) or use a program like guiformat on your PC to format it as FAT32 and copy over your files.thanks that did it
now backing up sysnand, on the home stretch
Glad I decided to follow the guide, I have for other systems too and its worked great. dunno why I thought to not and just go off a youtuber, this method is concise
What is the easiest way to migrate from this stock 4gb to a 64gb? I think I've already gotten to the point of having the system boot up with cfw, without needing SD card
would I put the same luma/payload, gm9 root folder, and hold start with new sd card in to format it?

Check out https://3ds.guide/godmode9-usage, there's a section for dumping cartridges to cia.Whats the best way to dump my 3ds carts (and the few ds I have) to SD card?
https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutoria...-to-cia-dump-private-headers-ds-carts.432600/
I see this guide but seems like lots of parts involved, is there a simpler way than installing all that stuff?
Check out https://3ds.guide/godmode9-usage, there's a section for dumping cartridges to cia.
Yep there's a button on the touch screen of the home menu from memory for making the icons smaller, so you can see more at once (or you can scroll along). To install the cia files, use FBI and navigate to the folder they're in, select them, then choose "install and delete cia file" (or similar, don't remember the exact wording). I think there's also an option for installing all the files in a folder - so you could install 20 games and just leave it overnight for them to all install instead of having to select and install the next one each time one completes. Thanks! seems simple enough... thx for being patient w me almost there
and what do I do as far as installing them / deleting the install file?
other silly question but how do I have a bigger menu on my bottom screen of my 3ds? to see lots of icons at once instead of just a few horizontally?
