There is a new version of the blue and red 2DS models that come bundled with Mario Kart 7. It occurred to me that if I swap the casing with the old version of the same color, I will have one 2DS that is all black and another 2DS that is either all blue or all red.

The only problem I was able to notice so far is that the stylus is blue on both versions, although it might be possible to solve this by looking at third party styluses. (or just removing the stylus from the system)

Obviously, just to be safe, I think I should grab a broken 2DS system or two and try it out before moving on to the real deal. Just throwing this out here first in case someone has tried this before, and, just to check whether it's even possible. I think someone has done this before though... just with different colors. One thing to watch out is the screen bezel, the top screen has an outline matching the casing around it, at least on the white models. Here it seems to be black, so I guess it's not an issue.

Rear panels are a joke to change, but just a little heads up, front one is very hard because some product lines have stuff silicon-glued on it, so you need to be extra careful, plus it's a bit too firmly fit with the surrounding plastic (the side one). I think you should look for a guide on it and study how the console layout is inside so you don't mess anything up, but as long as you are careful, there shouldn't be any problems.
