If one doesn't intend to pirate games, and doesn't have any physical copies to back up, do flash carts serve a purpose?

if it ment 1-time pirating (CubicNinja rom) can be used as a last resort backup (you dont use A9LH/you update to 10.7 w/o updating payloads... you get a new 3DS unit... ) way to Homebrew.
