Well without knowing what style of games you like it's hard to say. Also this is all very subjective. A hundred people could post here and you probably would get told a hundred different games.

You could tell the overview of what you like in a video game.

I'll tell some games I like that are not super famous:

PS1
-Soul Reaver
- Vagant Story
- Gauntlet Legends
- Tomba
- Bload Roar 2

SNES
- Illusions of Gaia
- Tactics Ogre (fan translation)
- Choplifter (2 or 3, I dont remember)
- Biker Mice From Mars
- Top Gear (any one is good)
- Kat's Run (japanese)

NES
- Adventure Island
- Spy vs Spy
- Crystalis

Mega Drive
- Kid Chameleon
- Chase HQ II
- Gunstar Heroes
- Battle Mania 2
- Outrun

Master System
- Aztec Aventure
- Enduro Racer
- Ys
- Fantasy Zone
- Double Dragon

Gameboy
- Tori Tori
- Kid Dracula
- Molemania
- Battle Arena

Gameboy Advance
- Klonoa
- Astro Boy
- Alien Hominid

3DO
- Road Rash
- Need for Speed

Some of those emulator devices do play linux games, if yours can do it, try Celeste and Stardew Valley.

Also, It's likely that your device can play GZ-Doom, if does, go for it.

Mother3 is great. Do not skip. If you like that, then play Earthbound (SNES). That’s the second one.

On GBA, play
Final Fantasy 1+2: Dawn of Souls. All 3 Castlevanias.
Gadget Racers.

On PS1, you should really play Metal Gear Solid.
VR missions was also great.
Final Fantasy VII made me cry. Driver was also fun.

On the NES, try Shadowgate. It’s a fun dungeon crawler type game. Deja Vu was very similar, but set in another time.
Monster Party was fun, but I realize it was pretty buggy.
River City Ransom is a great brawler, way better that Double Dragon.
Desert Commander was a fun real time strategy game.

In the genesis,
Kings Bounty is one of my go to games. I’ve beat it approximately one hundred thousand times. The fun thing about this game is, the location of the scepter is different each time. You can choose one of four characters and 3 different difficulty levels. This is one of those games that can be mastered in different ways. Different strategies. It’s like putting on a nice big warm coat, for me.
Shadowrun is a classic. I used to play DnD and got into playing Shadowrun. This was a tabletop game. Many dice and lots of paper. This version of Shadowrun is very true to the pencil and paper version.

Yea, asking "what retro games to try" is like asking "what video games to try", it's a very wide spectrum, and you should be more specific about style/type/system etc. in order to narrow down games that fit that criteria..
