According to AMD, the next Xbox will be capable of visuals like James Cameron's megahit Avatar.

While this could be taken with a grain of salt, AMD is rumored to be developing the graphics tech behind the latest Xbox, so this may be a bit more reliable than your average shot-in-the-dark estimations.

Speaking in the latest issue of Official Xbox Magazine, AMD also said that the console will be able to have major overhauls to game AI and physics.

Neal Robinson, director of ISV for AMD, also went on to say that in open world sandbox games like Grand Theft Auto V and Saint's Row The Third, that developers will be able to create individual mentality for every pedestrian in the game, which seems to be quite an achievement for such large games. Crowds in these games are also said to be able to act as a bunch of individuals and not just as a mob.

There have been multiple rumors concerning Microsoft's newest gaming console, but the biggest one seems to have it rumored at a E3 2012 reveal.

What do you think? Can the new Xbox be truly this powerful? If it's true, do you think the abilities for radical change in AI and physics will be a major shift in gaming? Tell us what you think![/p]

That AI stuff looks promising. Everyone used to say to praise Nintendo that real advances in consoles should be made in how you interact with the game and not just in the grahic power, but having a more badass AI that doesn't change how you interact with the game, but how the game interacts with you, seems pretty spot-on!

This is so ridiculous.
Who wants that kind of power, if it's even affordable to mass produce ?
Do you have any idea how much would it cost to develop such games ?
Avatar was officially budgeted at $237 million. Other estimates put the cost between $280 million and $310 million for production and at $150 million for promotion.
Do you think game developers would be willing to spend that kind of money on a videogame ? And if so, how much are we gonna end up paying for a said game ?
I'm happy with my gaming PC for smooth, realistic HD gameplay for the moment, and I'll be all set for several years when the Wii U will launch.
Who needs to play a movie.....

You pretty much summed it up, the thoughts I had on my mind.

I love the AI idea, I hope it comes true soon. Just imagine RPGs with something like that implemented or even action games!

And the trailer (which is in the original article) looks good, I'd love graphics like that even though I usually like older visuals (

LOL, it took Ubisoft's Montreal computers 4 months to render the movie Avatar in a old and secret military bunker in Quebec.

You will get the same crap king of games that you get right now, with still poor single player mode, vast and boring multiplayer online. The only think that will change is better AI and better textures. Animation and body movement will still sucks because it's done by human.

with all the money playstation makes of its other products, it will still be 60-40 PlayStations way, no offence to all you XBox users, microsoft may have money from computer sales, but thats it, they aren't innovative enough.

Yes, but aren't they also stating that the thing will only have an HD 4800-level GPU as well?

Not very forward thinking there.

AMD already makes the GPU's in the Wii and 360, so it's reasonable to expect them to stay in it for at least one of the next generation of console hardware. NVIDIA has already had its fun with tormenting Sony with the gimped 7800 they put for the ps3.

The more important thing would be to make good software and tools that allows these devs to access that power easily, and efficiently. Dare I say it, these SDK's need to be like open source in order to really wring out all that extra power that they're talking about having, and getting the most of what's there in the long run.

funny... I remember well that, when this current generation arrived, developers where also raving about the unlimited capabilities in terms of AI... how more inteligent the NPC's would act... and now, go, figure, they're after all dumb as hell (read: as the last Gen)... and the next gen is going to blow our minds.

maybe im just a cynic, but developers/exec's are usually always daydreaming and blowing their own trumpet... so, this kind of speech usually goes unnoticed.

Please, everyone remember this: the next Xbox3/PS4 will be based on tech that is about to be released on the PC (yup), and I can tell you its not that mindblowing. Its just a graphical evolution. It wont be "Alien tech from the future"... and from what im seeing, Avatar's visuals will not be possible on home-machines in the near future. keep dreaming

I remember when the PS2 was going to have Toy Story graphics.
Yea, what a glorious truth that turned out to be.

That being said, we haven't even got as far as doing fast-enough real-time ray tracing on a PC. Only by then do I think consoles will have a fraction of a chance to do it.

Developing a game for the 360/PS3 is already expensive enough as it is. By releasing this "Avatar-like" visuals capable console on the market would only screw Microsoft and the gaming market

Oh sure, it is possible... if you've got the kind of bankroll to afford it.

After all, Polyphony brought out GT4 in 1080i for the PS2... and it only took them most of the lifespan of the console on the market, plus being on Sony's private bankroll to do it, too.

Maybe by 2019, people will be able to do 1080p 3D with 7.1 sound on their PS3's too.

what are you talking about?
They said "like" and don't forget that HD Videos have a much lower res. than Digital Cinemas (over 8k).
With new technology and 28 - 22 nm production, it should be possible to produce everything for a reasonable price.
Im sure the Wii U with this Tablet controller will not be much cheaper.
