Wow, I love how u guys ignored my post.

Because you made absolutely no effort to differentiate between what you were quoting and what your response was. It was just one gigantic quote tag, which most people just assume is a straight quote of the original post, and skip over it. I for one am not going to scroll up and down and up and down on the page just to figure out what the differences are between the two blocks of text. Either use multiple quote tags in the same post, or bold your responses, or SOMETHING so that people know who said what. Only then will people actually bother to read what you have to say.

Wow I JUST noticed that the huge quote in his post wasn't the quote from MY post but it had his reply added inside it... Now I KNOW that's a troll... hurrrr

why did you make a dupe just for this thread? if you have the balls too insult homebrew, do it with your real account!
---
All the games that you will spend some time with are named here. Except Pocket Physics,LemmingsDS and the emulators.
If you can't take the chessy graphics. *snip

I dislike homebrew games.

APPS are amazing though, don't even diss those. If it werent for my dynamic setup, i could go on aim :`(

I've been loitering round GBAtemp for a while and had to respond to this thread.

I actually really like homebrew games, and the fact that you can't respect the effort and time put into homebrew projects is unfair. If you don't like it, your choice but posting like this is hardly supportive of the programmers.

Im really just MAD, i dnt know how to do quotes right, im new!

That doesn't give you a reason got bash other people's work (good work too in my opinion) without backing up your argumentations with real arguments... Just saying "Homebrew is bad, I'd rather buy a real game because they look better" isn't enough, it's called "hey, let's start a flame war in the homebrew section of the forums, since I'm new it would be fun!" and that's how trolls act... If you are a troll then go away, if you aren't... then stop feeding the flames of hatred in this thread. kthxbai

Ya it does. I dont buy games either, i download em

If you posted this in a different section, the NDS games or console games section for example, I might have believed you.. but you posted right into the Homebrew Section... this means you either like getting flamed / starting flame wars or that you are completely clueless of what you're talking about... pick up your preferred choice..

Am I seriously the only one who thinks homebrews are baaaad! I mean, maybe it is because I like RTS, RPG, TD games, and there really arent any on homebrew, or maybe I HATE the cheesy graphics...

Well can anyone recommend any Action, Adventure, RPG, RTS and TD Games?

Thanks

Thanks for wasting my time with this topic.

I too believe that there is a severe shortage of decent homebrew games. Just because they're homebrew doesn't mean there's any reason for making something second-rate. The best homebrew game I've played is actually a card game...Spider Solitaire DS by jt0. Solid gameplay, consistent interface, and plenty of polish. Anguna, someone mentioned...is NOT an RPG, not even close, and is lacking in a great number of ways. I had the chance to try a demo of someone's more traditional attempt at an RPG...it uses graphics from RPG Maker XP, which wasn't bad, but the tiles and sprites are so large that it looks like there's not enough perspective. I personally long for decent traditional-style RPGs...so I'm writing one myself.

Long gone are the days of valiant attempts at commercial-quality games, it seems. Most homebrew DS game developers, I believe, have the "it's only the DS" or "it's only homebrew" problem. Just because it's a DS or it's homebrew doesn't mean you can't give it your best effort. They need to stop making excuses and do the best job they can. "But I don't have an artist!" So? Find some tiles and sprites online, or read up on one of the many thousands of pixeling tutorials out there and get the job done yourself. "I can't make music!" modarchive.com is your friend. "My coding isn't good enough!" So learn. There are, again, thousands of tutorials out there. "I can't make sound effects!" No excuse for this one...there are more WAV sites out there than music, coding, and pixel art sites combined. And if you can't find what you want, make them yourself! It doesn't matter if you have to go out to Radio Shack and buy a cheap $10 mic and then fart on it to make samples, it's better than nothing! "But I don't know how to convert samples!" Go get a copy of switch or sox and learn them.

This is not a call to war or an attack on homebrewers. It's a call to action. There are some brilliant minds in the DS scene and it's a real shame that better work isn't being produced. Stop lamenting over the supposed technical limitations of the DS. The only limitations are the ones you impose upon yourself.

I think a good adage would be, "Never look a gift-horse in the mouth."
Each and every homebrew you'll ever find for the DS is a gift from the developer to us. I can only imagine what it must have been like for the products of Moonlight, Dragonminded, and many other high-profile developers to be met with little but ingratitude.

I'll bet you anything that Im Inylo is one of those to whom 'homebrew' means 'unpolished games' and nothing else.

OneMichael, that kind of attitude is one of the reasons why independent efforts rarely reach commercial quality. It's not about "what can we get for free", it's about "can I make this game the best I can". Furthermore, Dragonminded and Moonlight primarily make utilities, not games, so there's no comparison. It's not nearly as hard to make a commercial-grade utility as it is to make a commercial-grade game. Game development, especially for a one-man-army, is a highly technical art where you have to be the master of many areas of expertise. However, I see people all the time not bothering to even consider improving in areas in which they lack. There's no shame in asking others for help, especially if you really do want to make the best production possible. There are plenty of graphics artists, musicians, writers, etc. out there to help you out if you approach them correctly.

And furthermore, all these personal attacks in this thread are unwarranted. All people have the right to express their opinions, whether you like their opinions or not. Im Inylo could have used a bit more tact but not everyone is an English major.

I may agree with you in some parts, however it's not our right to complain about something that we can get for free. It's not that "they should try to work harder and better even though the games are free", it's "we should be thankful with whatever we can get, regardless of the work it required to its creator".

Honestly, these developers (most of them) do give their best effort into creating a game for the DS. They don't have all the time in the world to try and make their game perfect. Nearly every developer for the DS is using their spare time to develop. You should be happy at what they've released, and thank them for their time and effort.

The people who actively complain about the quality of games are the ones to be ignored. I'm not talking about someone making a comment in passing, I'm referring to people who go out of their way to bitch and moan. But we can get just about anything "for free"...that's a moot point. But quite frankly, it should not be hard to surpass commercial DS efforts...have you all seen some of the slop that come out of studios these days?

One thing people might want to keep in mind is this: if game development is something you want to do professionally, then taking your homebrew efforts seriously is a good idea. Quite often, you can use what you've done with "alternate tools" as part of your presentation to a game company. If you approach your production with a professional attitude, it'll help your chances. "Product mentality", it's called.

This is so completely true that it is not even funny. If you seem to think that all of the homebrew games suck, why don't you try to outdo the rest of us at coding games? It seems that this thread has turned into complete uselessness. Honestly.

Point to where I said all homebrew games suck. If you can't find it, then I suggest you re-read what a person says before speaking with a confrontational attitude.
