Hi!

Since there now been posted a malware payload. I would recommend anyone not to post third-party sites for payloads. Always get them from the creators and especially known creators. Get SX from their site and not of a Github.
I'm not sure if it's possible to restore a Switch if you gotten a nasty malware that might erased a lot of parts of your system or not.

Payloads themselves are risky already and for now, don't run cracked SXOS, it's also prohibited to upload a cracked SXOS here anyway since it's a violation against our rules for Copyright infringement.

So stay safe, get your payloads from safe source(s) and not thirdparty! Avoid 1 posters that claim fame etc.

The irony that we have an SX OS crack thread but it will never live up to fruition because the crack can't be shared on GBATemp.

(The crack itself is safe to share, but not the cracked version ;))

I don't understand. Where do I put this obviously risky file on my console again? My what? NAND backup? Is that like a fruit?

Why is it not allowed? They're not a real company with rights
While most people would not treat TX as a legitimate company, the fact is that they have a paid product that is only obtainable from their official resellers. Making that freely available is akin to making a free version of Splatoon. Its still piracy. But what you can share is a way to do it yourself because that is the gray area GBATemp has agreed to.

Technically, SXOS falls under the GPL, even if they don't want it to. So wouldn't posting a cracked copy be perfectly legal? :)
Nope. It's not legal still, even if they violate GPL. GPL only demands the changes in the source code. Not a finished binary.

The brickcode being out there now is also going to cause issues in that it can be slipped in just about anywhere from anyone at anytime, and they don't even have to write it now. Any payload from anywhere but the creator is now a perilous gamble and trolls will absolutely abuse it to brick consoles. Its extremely easy to get your hands on it now.

Random people will absolutely run into it, and destroy gen1 Switches.

Whose copyright it's it then? Their keys are all over the place like it's nothing. Something only illegal if there are charges pressed who is going to go after anybody that has a cracked ossx
No, it's still illegal if you crack it... Murder is still illegal even if no one press charges against you. Team Xecutur charges money for the backup loader, the OS itself is free. So yes, it's very much TX copyright and GBAtemp wish not to handle any DMCAs.

Hmm, not according to the GPL

3. Protecting Users' Legal Rights From Anti-Circumvention Law. No covered work shall be deemed part of an effective technological measure under any applicable law fulfilling obligations under article 11 of the WIPO copyright treaty adopted on 20 December 1996, or similar laws prohibiting or restricting circumvention of such measures.

When you convey a covered work, you waive any legal power to forbid circumvention of technological measures to the extent such circumvention is effected by exercising rights under this License with respect to the covered work, and you disclaim any intention to limit operation or modification of the work as a means of enforcing, against the work's users, your or third parties' legal rights to forbid circumvention of technological measures.

It's your guys' call, of course. But you should know that there's nothing illegal about sharing cracked copies of SXOS, or sharing cracks for SXOS, purely because they used GPL'd code in the first place. They may not like it, but the law is the law :)

That doesn't still say it's legal to share the crack, it's highly illegal how you ever you try to turn it, end of discussion really. SX OS crack or not, don't share it here, it's other sites for that on the web.

This is honestly so fucked up. I used the SX crack payload (but I had a nand backup ready, because I knew it could be malicious) and I had to restore.

And now every code you ever download might have this in it, if its not from a the creator specifically.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

And just wait until someone updates it to corrupt boot.

Even if that is the case, I can always recover at least.
