So I had to reset my install of Windows 10 since MBAM didn't find a virus.
So I was wondering if anyone could recommend me a good antivirus
Thanks

It's not an antivirus. It's an antispyware/antimalware application.Malwarebytes. It costs money, but it's really damn good.
For a real-time antivirus program, they're all pretty much the same as long as they're kept up to date. I personally use Windows Defender because it's low-resource and out of the way. I also do a scan with the free version of Malwarebytes from time to time.
My understanding is that Windows Defender is less likely to slow down a computer than most other real-time antivirus programs. In addition, you can add exceptions to trusted programs if they're somehow being interfered with.I used Windows Defender on Windows 10 and it slowed down my laptop and prevented some of my trusted programs from updating, keeping them from starting up.
I had similar experiences with both Avast and Kaspersky. However, Avast was intrusive, and I prefer something that stays out of my way unless there's something important that I need to deal with (which is never).I use Avast Free and it's not invasive, doesn't ever false-flag the things I pirate, and it's pretty lightweight.
I used to use Kaspersky, and it false-flagged practically everything I pirated as infected and would randomly use as much CPU as possible when it was doing nothing.

how do you remove cortana? If your antivirus actively watches every frikin' thing you do, it's going to slow down your computer to a crawl. This is the approach a few of them take, and it's annoying. you can turn off most of those resource-heavy "imma watch you" features, but then it's cheaper to get something free. Prevention + anti-malware + passive antivirus will work fine.
Prevention is mainly plugins for your browser:
ublock origin (chrome, firefox)
WOT (chrome, firefox)
ghostery (chrome, firefox)
sandboxie (for testing/running shady things)
anti-malware:
ccleaner (free)
Malware-antibytes (free)
passive antivirus:
what other people say in this thread. I use windows defender.
Another good bet is to make sure to get rid of all the windows10 bloat. They made it for laptops+everything, so remove all the +everything bits and your laptop will thank you. I've removed cortana and many of the features I will never use but take resources.
That's strange, the only notifications I've got from Avast so far have been mainly notifications telling me it's scanning something because it thinks it may be virus infected.I used to use Avast free but it became so annoying blocking stuff thats not a virus and getting told I've got a free gift and all it was money off the full version all the notifications I kept getting from it just became too much then I switched over to nod32 I cracked that it worked like a charm but then I noticed it was using more of my laptop then avast.
This was annoying to type on my phone
