Also recommended Firefox addons I'm using Waterfox but Firefox addons work just fine with Waterfox

I use AVG but it shows me advert popups every day which is extremely annoying. So I am looking to change...
from what I read in this thread there isn't a universally recommended solution

common sense is the most helpful but sometimes just not enough, sometimes you have to work with USB devices from other people, sometimes you're going to download files from what looks like a legit server but that has been hijacked, etc, at the end of the day you're always safer with a decent antivirus (IMO)

edit: I found this http://www.tomsguide.com/us/best-antivirus,review-2588-5.html I am going to try Avira first since it's been ranked #1, and then the second one if I'm not satisfied, etc.
Avira can be installed via Ninite which is great

edit 2: goodbye AVG! you lost another user

I tend to use this site to compare antivirus software.
https://www.av-comparatives.org/

It's not a matter of finding the best antivirus software out there, for me, it's more about using an antivirus software that gives you the best level of protection based on your usage.

See, I still say HerdProtect is better because it uses a server-based system with 50 antiviruses running to make sure nothing is missed. And because samples are analyzed server-side, your computer doesn't get the huge performance hit that most antiviruses give you

after trying out avira it turns out it's the same as AVG: there are adverts every 2 days and you gotta pay if you want them disabled.
goodbye Avira! trying out the next one on the list...

How has no one here suggested bitdefender?

If you were going to pay for any antivirus program that is one worth its salt. MalwareBytes works good together with it and thats all you should need. Common sense is something else you need but for some people you need to pay a subscription fee for that.

I am using bit defender now, the free version.
I haven't seen any popups in the 3-4 days I've been using it, but the app is extremely simple, no customisation/options at all (that I have found)
I don't know if it will be efficient... but for now at least I've got something and I don't get popups every other day
