I own a DS Lite and have been using a CycloDS Evolution for more than four years and it is still working flawlessly.
Two weeks ago I decided to purchase a 3DS XL which has the latest firmware. I can still go to the store and trade it for a new one (got about two more weeks).

Questions:
  1. I assume that flashcart distributors do not update their firmware at the stores, so if I were to buy one now would it work at all?
  2. I have been reading about using another DS to update the flashcart's firmwares, would I be able to do that with my DS Lite? My cousin also owns a DSi I could borrow so there's that.
  3. Unlike shown on the Firmware Update Compilation Thread, I cannot check my firmware by going into Other Settings. The only reason I know I am on the latest firmware is because I tried to update.
  4. Is there some way I can stop the 3DS from updating automatically?
  5. Which of these flashcarts is more reliably updated to work with the 3DS's firmware updates: Acekard 2i, R4i Gold or Supercard DS Two.

Sorry if any of these have already been answered, they probably have but I read most stickies before asking.

Thank you.

Forget about Acekard 2i.
R4i Gold and DSTWO are great.
R4i Gold is cheap and DSTWO is expensive but it has more stuff like emulating GBA games(but its not perfect)

And yes, you can update the firmware with ur DS Lite.
The 3DS doesn't update itself, it just downloads the Update but it asks later if you wanna update.
And if you wanna get rid of the update notoficiation go to System settings>Internet Settings>Spotpass and disable Automatic Software Downloads and Sending of System Information.

Thanks for your input. Do you have an opinion regarding the reliability of the both those flashcart's firmware updates?

Both R4i Gold (www.r4ids.cn) and DSTWO updates they cards in 2-7 days after the date of the new 3DS firmware.

I forgot to tell you that some of the R4i Gold revisions don't work on the latest 3DS firmware.
if they are gonna work in the future i don't know.
They said that they are gonna update it.
Right now Revisions 9,A,B and C work on the latest firware.
6,7 and 8 not.

Before buying it check if the card is Rev 9,A,B or C, but most of the online shops put in the description which Revision it is.(Like ZhuZhuChina)

I'll be ordering a Supercard DS Two from Chipspain then, it's €30 and I think it's worth the special features. I am used to cheating in that odd grindfest RPG and saving wherever I want so it's definitely worth it.
Thank you for your help.

Thank you for your help.

One more thing, do not buy the DSTWO Mini!

It needs to be the SuperCard DSTWO card.

1 - Most stores do nowadays because it's become an issue, but the carts are not always updated to the latest version. Usually the product page shows what it's been updated to.

2 - Yes, a DS Lite can always update a flash cart, since it has no firmware updates to block them.

3 - Dunno' the specifics.

4 - The best thing to do is never put it online.

5 - R4i Gold and DSTwo. The AK2i is slow in updating lately, taking a month or more.
