Paper Mario PC port "Paper Boat" gets its first public release

After being in the works for quite a while now, the latest project from the Harbour Masters team finally makes port. You can now download the first release of Paper Boat on Windows, Mac, and Linux, with the game being playable from start to finish. At the time of writing there aren't a huge number of enhancements, with the game supporting custom aspect ratios and a few cheats. There is a mod menu included though, so I'll be excited to see what the community comes up with for the game.

As always this project ships without any assets, requiring you to provide your own ROM on first boot. Be reminded that this forum is not a place to request or share such things.

Oh brother are we really going to have this dumb convo everytime? It’s not like they’re using it to steal creative work or anything. I think this use of ai is like the only good use case brah
I think gaming PCs are a better use of memory supply chains than clanker generated ports of games that already have other ways of playing.

Probably gonna delete my account if I keep seeing front page articles about clankers making playable games playable.

What good is a gaming and modding forum that promotes projects that make gaming unaffordable?

What point is there in a hacking community if it isn't people doing the hacking?

Was about to post how Harbour Masters usually names its PC ports with nautical terms, and instead I find everyone complaining about the supposed use of AI in this port?

Ethical debate notwithstanding, the jury is out regarding the impact on actual gameplay of the ports.

Please, you and all the other ingrates here that can only bitch! I really have to wonder, if between 1995 and 2000, people were constantly complaining about all the stupid websites and 'dotcoms' and swearing to just stay off the internet for ever. AI doesn't just magically make games, but I'm 100% thoroughly convinced you all know that from having tried and failed, and that's the real reason for the fake outrage; you tried, you failed, others make it work, and the internet of failures talk about how "easy" it is.

Either way, what a gaming community!!! You're given free source ports that add play-ability, function, feature, access, and bring our favorite older games back, but because the code used a more advanced form of auto-correct, you're ungrateful, whiny, and stupid.

Every time a decomp is finished, the first thing people start chattering about is "recomp soon!! Only takes days, maybe a week", then when the recomp is out just that quickly, a bunch of smooth brains start bitching about the use of AI, swear they won't play it, then click "download" immediately after clicking "post comment"! :rofl2::rofl2:

You enjoy your hypocritical false "outrage", I'll enjoy the games!

Imagine if @Costello charged $2 per account registration then we probably wouldn't need sponsors.

More slop? Come on now. HM has seen fit to become spineless hacks chasing quantity over quality, and I don't see how they deserve any further recognition for thinking so lowly of these games.

I'm getting real tired of this discussion. Not every project that uses AI code is slop. I feel like the HM team has earned their reputation of providing quality ports that are well maintained have they not?

I feel like it's becoming the post covid mask thing. At a certain point, people are just virtue signaling (not saying everyone who wears a mask in the big 26 is virtue signalling, but many are)

Yes this exactly. LLMs allows us to have these ports much faster without straining developers as much. You do realize that Windwaker has been in the decomp process for about 3 years and Melee was 6 years. Those are getting manually decomped.

Not everyone is going to be able to take the time to port each and every game to PC.

If the final product works who really cares?
