I thought I read you can't update 3ds correctly via rom or cia update.

You can, I've done it in the past just fine. You just have to make sure it's not a trimmed ROM.

you can update emunand fine with a rom

You can update emunand from a rom. You can't update sysnand, or it will brick.

You can still do that, I assumed gateway removed that feature. I remember doing that a long time ago, updated my emunand from 4.4 to 4.5 with a luigi rom.

It's been a while. I think you load the ROM from your menu, then hold up on the D-pad and hit A when the "cursor" is over the game. Someone wanna verify?

hold UP when entering gateway mode to allow on cart updates

oh and in the meantime we can just pretend right

I used Super Smash Bros to update my emunand. Worked fine.

It's been a while. I think you load the ROM from your menu, then hold up on the D-pad and hit A when the "cursor" is over the game. Someone wanna verify?

Lol, I just held it the whole time (while booting into GateWay mode), to avoid any risk.
