After getting the 3DS, and then realising it had a region lock (I didn't look into it as it was a gift that I didn't know about) I sent Nintendo an email clarifying things... Here you go!

My girlfriend has recently bought me a 3DSXL for Christmas, but with the stupid region lock now on Nintendo handhelds, this has created a problem for those that travel internationally with our handhelds. (Gosh!)
Is there a way for me to change the region when in Canada? I know it is a software based region lock, and can easily be edited? Will a software update will in North America change my region? Can I simply send it in for repair and have your guys change it's region lock?
Or will I have to resort in bypassing the region lock myself, like the Freeloader for the Gamecube? It can be done, do not say it can't.
Nintendo's Repsonse:
Dear Sir/Madam,
Thank you for contacting Nintendo.
The region lock is inherently built into the 3DS console itself, therefore there is no way to change the region lockout.
Thank you for your email.
Kind regards,
Nintendo UK
