So which flashcard will play 3ds games on a 2dsxl. Thanks for the help btw
Do not buy a flashcart for that purpose. If you have an R4i Gold 3DS RTS, you can follow the guide at https://3ds.guide to install Boot9Strap and Luma3DS to your console. You'll then be able to install CIA-format games to your 3DS.

https://3ds.guide has all the information you need.
The simplest way to install CFW as of now, on a 11.6 console, is to get a cartridge with NTRBoot, and use NTRBootHax to install Boot9Strap. I'd recommend an R4i Gold 3DS RTS, as you don't need a second system to flash it with NTRBoot, given that it can run NDS titles even on the latest firmware.

All 2DS XLs come on 11.4 or over - better to research BEFORE buying :-p

If you install B9S on your old 3DS you can use it to install B9S on your 2DS XL - look at the DSiWare hax method on https://3ds.guide

There's nothing on google about this, so I assume it's obvious, but just wanted to make sure. I'm trying to use the r4i gold rts flashcart to play .nds games on my n2dsxl 11.6, but it's not exactly working the way I hoped. Yes, I have the latest kernel, and it works absolutely great when the micro sd card is inserted into the flashcart. But when it's like that the console doesn't seem to recognize the sd card, so even though I can play .nds games, I can't access any sd card-stored titles. When the sd card is in the console but not in the flashcart, the flashcart obviously can't access the kernel.

So, I was wondering if I'm just missing something or if there's actually no way to use the flashcart and access sd card-installed titles at the same time. I don't really want to keep rebooting and popping my sd card in and out constantly if I want to switch between games. I know there's twloader, but I was just really curious about using the flashcart.

Of course it won't work like that. It can't use the flashcart's SD as its own SD. You should get a new SD card.

If you wanted to update you'd have to follow https://3ds.guide/updating-b9s
But there's no reason to, it doesn't add anything new, or allow newer Lumas to work, or anything. The latest Luma works on b9s 1.2.

Did something major change again with Luma, or has there just not been a significant update? I have Luma Updater 2.1.2 running v 8.1.1-f6483ec, it says the latest hourly is a74d9c6 but it tells me "You cannot install the latest hourly at this time." My system version is 11.4.0-37U and apparently that's inadequite to use online features in pokemon anymore.
