Thanks for all the answers think I have my head wrapped around most of it now.

What was confusing me about luma settings was all the sys/emunand stuff, but I now realize emunand is like a temporary sandbox version of your sysnand in case something goes wrong, however I don't plan on doing much more so I think I'm cool to stick with booting to sysNAND. The guide doesn't really explain a lot of the terms, just what you can/can't do, but I'm getting there slowly by trawling through multitudes of forum topics.

So now I continue with luma and run rx or reinand on top of it for signature emulation then I'm good to go and install games in the form of .cia files.

Just dropping my thoughts in case any of it is wrong.

No - rxTools and reiNAND do the same thing as Luma, only rxTools is super buggy and hasn't been in development for about a year, and ReiNAND is an ancestor of Luma. (Luma evolved from AuReiNAND which evolved from ReiNAND). Luma will patch signatures just fine, that's its main point.

All what you need a SD card + an exploit way to access the homebrew.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I want to explain something, that happened to me.

about how i get dgTOOL worked for me.
( ive seen lot of people asking same thing )

I was running an update 11.1 with my console
everything goes fine untill ( failure ) word, ok ?

That because dgTOOL 1.0.0 beta can't read firm111 file !
So, basically .. I changed it name from firm111 to firm110.

AS LIKE THAT !

Then you're lucky it worked without problems.

If you read the page carefully, it says there that there is a dgtool version for 11.0 and one for 11.1:
The release of dgTool corresponding to 3DS #2's' version:
And the same for the N_FIRMS:
The firmware zip corresponding to the device and version of 3DS #2:
  • New 3DS 11.0.0 to 10.4.0 (VER. 11.0)
  • Old 3DS 11.0.0 to 10.4.0 (VER. 11.0)
    ~
  • New 3DS 11.1.0 to 10.4.0 (VER. 11.1)
  • Old 3DS 11.1.0 to 10.4.0 (VER. 11.1)

You DON'T have to alter anything from what it says there.
Usually that's when BRICKs happen.

Good to see it worked out for you but that's NOT how you use the dgtool.

It was something i did on 3DS#1 I guess thats why it didn't works on 3DS#2, I was worried but it is what it is.
and finally,

I'll go for sysNAND again , my best choice i think.

No, EmuNAND is not a temporary sandbox. And you should be very careful if you plan on running a Menuhax based setup as at any time you can screw it up by updating the wrong NAND.

Correction, Luma didn't evolve from AuReiNAND. Luma IS AuReiNAND. The project was renamed. This is not an evolution nor a fork of AuReiNAND, it's the same CFW.

But every guide I'm looking at says it is?

https://gbatemp.net/threads/guide-a-noobnands-guide-to-sysnand-and-emunand.410439/
"EmuNAND stands for "emulated NAND". EmuNAND is essentially a copy of sysNAND's contents, but stored on a hidden partition on the SD card."

http://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/3DS_Flashcart_FAQ#What_is_EmuNAND.3F
"EmuNAND is a copy of your 3DS NAND chipset. It allows you to use this copy located on SD card as if it was your real one located inside the console."

http://www.maxconsole.com/threads/what-is-a-emunand.34612/
"It's stored on a hidden partition of your SD Card, so you have two partitions on your SD. The classic one, where the files are stored (the files that you see on Windows for example) and a hidden one that Windows don't see by default but which is used by the gateway.

Basically, as its name is stating it, emunand is an emulated nand. It's more or less like a Virtual Machine on your computer, as the 3DS nand contain the 3DS OS."

If you google "emunand sandbox" it comes up with lots and lots of results saying it's comparable to a sandbox environment.

If you run a menuhax setup with emuNAND, and you update your sysNAND, you will lose your hax. The reason for emuNAND is to allow you to keep your sysNAND at a low enough firmware for hax.
However, a9lh allows you to update sysNAND, so emuNAND is not needed.
I have never before heard emuNAND referred to as a 'sandbox' and I first got my Gateway in 2013 and started with CFW in 2014.

There's a difference between a redirected NAND (because it isnt really "emulated") and a sandbox.
First of all, sometimes it needs stuff from SysNAND (like having GBA titles installed to it as well).

The EmuNAND isn't emulated, nor is it a virtual machine. It is a redirected NAND (hence the very similar RedNAND).

Hi all,

I'm new here and also new to the 3DS CFW, I've been trying and got my O3ds working with Steelhax on 11.1, today I got a friend's o3ds he just bought and it came with rxTools on 10.5, I've been reading and researching on the process to get mine to CFW with A9LH and Luma, but the thing is I have some questions about the process.

I would like to keep my NNID and my saves, I would like to keep the installed games on my friend's system, the NNID on his system doesn't matter.

I plan on using Plailect's guide for the transfer.
  • When I do the transfer, should I do it from the rxTools system(10.5) or from the original one(9.2)?
  • Is there a way to get advantage of having steelhax already or I must buy Fieldrunners?
  • Once transferred, how do I restore his system back to normal?
  • If I plan on updating his system to Luma and A9LH, will the installed games be lost? For this step I will be using this guide.
Thanks in advance.
