As usual, this answer is probably right in front of my face and I'm missing it, so I'm taking all my latest inquiries here, because I'm starting to feel bad for pressing the veterans patience by starting new threads all the time.

Just got rxtools/emunand/cia installer working. I want to play some titles above my emunand system menu version, 9.2.0-20U. I don't have a flashcard. How do I safely update my emunand system menu version?

Oops, my bad. Old.

Emunand Information

Some users report their sysnand still being updated following the below steps. Unlinking your nands before attempting to update may avoid this. Please read this post before deciding to unlink nands: http://gbatemp.net/threads/guide-the-emunand-save-data-mega-guide-gbatemp-doesnt-deserve.378491/(Please, please, pleasseee read this!).

If you have an update nag on sysnand, follow these short steps to delete the update from your system first, reducing any risk of updating sysnand to be EXTREMELY unlikely. Do not do step 4 obviously, click "no"!

To update your emunand, only do so through the System Settings app.
Do NOT update if it asks you if you're "ready to start system update" or whatever it says whenever you boot your 3ds, OR through the Eshop. It will update your sysnand instead.

How to properly update emunand: Boot into Emunand, and launch System Settings. Make sure it says RX-E or RX3D in front of the version number to be sure that you are in emunand, and go straight to Other Settings -> System update without exiting the System Settings app.

I have the n3ds with Monster Hunter preinstalled. If I want to move the game to the bigger sd card that I will be using, I just have to copy the game from one card to the other, right? Assuming I haven't done anything else yet.

I screwed up and bricked my O3DS. I was using sysUpdater on rxMode 2.6 in sysNand. I ignored that I needed to be in Devmode using 3.0, thinking that everything was ok because I wasn't using Gateway. But I guess in a strange complicated way I was using Gateway...

EITHER WAY

Unbricking has been working out for people who brick Jumping between 2 carts. I'm certain I too will also be able to unbrick but I'm not sure considering I'm in a different circumstance. SO will I be able to unbrick using Rapsberry Pi methods that also unbrick Gateway bricks? I DO HAVE A NAND BACKUP.

Hi

If I buy a 2ds (new, blue/red transparent) right now, will I be able to install cfw on it? Should I search for a used one?

I can't find the info nor a video of that model of 2ds being hacked.

Thanks.

Thank you for the people who replied, I have indeed acquired some CIA and 3ds files - so now I just need to do the 'modding', I am glad you have posted and saved me breaking anything - I always like to check up and read a few guides prior to doing anything like that - some info is outdated and no longer relevant so it's good to be pointed in the proper direction from an expert who has a lot of experience in this field - is mine is zero just now until I do some reading. I just like to read the correct information though :-).

Thanks

You just need to make sure that it's under 9.2. AFAIK you should be gold as long as you have an exploitable firmware.

Question:

With regards to .cia, If i install a US .cia of Triforce Heroes on my EUR N3DS and updated it via .cia to its latest version. Would it enable me to play local multiplayer with other US 3DSes? Because IIRC local play is region locked but if my .cia is US would it somehow circumvent this?

anyone know if Majoras Mask needs to be fw spoofed when converting, or straight the way it is? does the update require higher than 9.5 to run?

9.2.0-20U:
QW4013 (MH4 UE) - Confirmed
QW4012 (MH4 UE) -Confirmed
QW4011 (Monster Hunter 4 ultimate edition) - Confirmed

It looks like the Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Edition (MH4 UE) consoles do have exploitable firmware.

Here's an answer that quantumcat gave me on the same subject:

Btw all o3DS and o3DSXL and non-limited edition 2DS new sealed in box are guaranteed exploitable.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Taken form the rxtools cfw installation guide:

If you want to install GBA/DSi games in the future:
Repeat lines 1-5 again, this time Injecting FBI to Sysnand

referring to installing FBI... Is there any chance of bricking/etc? I'm nervous changing anything on sysnand at all, but I feel like if it wasn't safe, the guide wouldn't have mentioned it so casually. Is this for running GBA Virtual Console titles/VC Injected roms?

O3DS 9.2.0-20U, no flashcart

I just installed "rxTools with Pasta CFW" via that Google Docs guide on o3DS SysNAND v9.2, EmuNAND v10.3. Then I installed Cubic Ninja cia to emunand, and I can't get it to boot Homebrew Launcher *hax 2.5 in emunand. It just freezes on a red bottom screen. Can anyone help?

Edit 1: I partially found out the reason. It's that CTRBootManager doesn't respond to the default disable auto-boot button, Select. I looked through the button code list, and I'm still unsure about it. I'm on an old 3DS which the config says should have the auto-boot delay set to 8, maybe it should be longer for mine.

Edit 2: The default disable auto-boot button was actually the B button, but the config example states Select. So I have all this working now.

I searched for a previous topic and that search ended up leading me to this thread so I might as well ask. I have an older 3dsXL that is on a firmware 9.2.20-2U. I do not want to upgrade it but I have quite a few titles that I have legitimately installed on it that I would like to transfer to a new 3DSxl. Is there a way to do this without upgrading the old 3dsxl? Is there a reason to keep it on this FW still? It's not a 4.5 or lower one. I have one of them but that one I have never upgraded since I bought it. But I don not want to upgrade it if it limits what I can do with it after the upgrade. Thanks, luney.

EDIT: How can I assure I have an exploitable firmware on the new 3dsxl I'm going to buy?

Just got a brand new o3DS XL with 4.5.0.10E on it.

Looking at all these guides and all have errors or cause some kind of issue at some point. I'm reading these guides perfectly yet always seem to get caught up at some point.

What guide can I use which will 100000% work.

Went to the below and tried video from DarkFlare got to "Error opening FBI TMD" on rxTools through the video but haven't been able to fix that issue.
https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-installing-rxtools-custom-firmware-3ds-and-2ds.390867/

Followed up by the PDF guide which also caused issues simply trying to open rxtools via the browser after. So not too sure what happened.

Anyone able to give me a straight forward guide that isn't confusing? Feel really dumb right now unless I'm reading it all wrong.

Also after following the first guide somehow have 3 folders in the "Nintendo 3DS" folder which their long chains of text/numbers. 2 of them follow into dbs, extdata, title & the 3rd folder has just extdata. Unsure if any of that is an issue but yeah.. think I'm gunna sleep on it.

Create an emuNAND on both both consoles but don't update them. Then perform a system transfer selecting options that move data wirelessly. Don't update or you will lock yourself out of CFW/Gateway. Your legitimate stuff will now be on the emuNAND of the new 3ds.

Edit: you'll need a way to spoof eShop. You used to be able to just use FreeMultiPatcher but that doesn't work any more. You'll have to do some reading on this forum to find out how you can spoof the eShop, as I haven't tried it recently.

For an old 3ds/3ds xl/2ds you will have guaranteed exploitable firmware if you buy brand new and sealed (with the exception of the Yokai watch bundle). For new 3ds/new 3ds xl, you just have to be very lucky (buy brand new from a shop that has very slow turnover), or buy from a pawn shop that lets you look first, or pay extra on ebay for a listing that mentions the firmware being 9.2 or less.

I think you have miss-typed your firmware version and it really is 9.2.0-20 <---- totally exploitable.

This will help you to find an exploitable New 3DS:

https://gbatemp.net/threads/n3ds-xl-firmware-by-version-number.381479/

Once you install CFW + emunand in both systems you can make a system transfer between them without updating your systems.
