So it's 2017 and the Switch is upon us.

Plenty (or not?) new&sealed WiiUs will flood auction sites in the coming weeks, both in 8GB and 32GB flavours, the former particularly cheap.

I was wondering: is there any reason to prefer 32GB black wiiUs over the 8GB basic (big fan of white here) in terms of hacking/cfw/USB_backups/vWii/VC?
Provided one will use a USB hdd anyway.

I think you should get an 8GB basic one, because the nand in that one is smaller. I had to buy a new 64GB sd card to dump my 32GB Wii U nand. If you're using a USB hdd anyway, there's really no point in a 32GB Wii U unless you really like the color black.

Not much difference, the 32gb is ok if you get it cheap, but if your going to be installing stuff to USB anyway, the onboard storage just goes to waste

I see.
I'm afraid on the 8GB to hit some capacity "roof" in the coming months/years of wiiU hacking scene.

Like, on the Wii it was super important to me to keep the most used VC titles on the NAND (vs the SD).

On the Wii U literally anything is bigger faster and better if loaded from the USB hdd? Can one ignore the user-available space on the NAND? Even for vWii and homebrew?

You are going to be adding extra storage regardless of which one you get. Neither 8 Gb nor 32 Gb is sufficient IMHO. I would add up to 500 Gb external storage on the cheaper 8 Gb model. You won't need anything bigger than 500 Gb unless you insist on putting all games including the shitty ones in your library

You're gonna need ext. HDD anyway because 32gb isn't enough for more than like 3-4 (full) games anyway.

So get the 8gb. I'd prefer white too but I could only get my hands on the 32gb version. Came with an amiibo at least :)

Dont start all this bullshit about sd cards. A 64gb sd is like $10 for gods sake.

If you cant afford that, grow up and get a job.
I think you missed the reply button bro. I've been using a 32gb micro sd card on my 3ds and thought it would be alright to use it for the Wii U. (I already use it between two 3ds consoles anyway) So I wasn't too thrilled about having to buy a 64GB SD card.

I think you missed the whole point of this thread. Why do you think the 32GB Wii U is better than the 8GB? Especially if it's being used with a USB HDD? Thanks for adding your wonderful insight to this thread. I'm sure your comment will save countless people both time and money on 64gb sd cards.

8GB is actually worthless

But 64 is too much for me. I can get a 32 card for 5$. I probably won't need a 64.

I use HDDs anyways

Could've just used sysnand, though...

Yeah, that's true, but if you want emunand, a 64gb sd card is required. Not sure if that's changed, but I know that back when I bought it, it was a requirement for emunand. (Or rednand, or purplenand, whatever it's called)

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
