Nintendo 3DS source code leaked

3ds.png

Two in a row today!

The item of interest, barely four hours after the last major drop, consists of partial source code for the Nintendo 3DS family updated as of October 2014:

  • Source code for the 3DS bootroms and kernels, including modules (drivers) for 3DS mode.
  • Precompiled DSi and GBA bootroms (the latter being the NDS variant).
  • Source code for most developer titles, including many not directly released to licensed developers.

The above list is the result of a cursory analysis: it may contain inaccuracies. However, notably, it does not contain any regular system application or applet, meaning the inevitable question about what this means for the 300 icon limit can already be answered.

On the Nintendo 64 some games released before the memory expansion pack run better with it on. Others do not and even have problems. I think a few games even crash?

So no, expecting improvements is not so out the wild as you may think.

Also Generations is the Japanese name hence the 4G in the Japanese name.
the japanese name for generations is cross/double cross
the japanese name for 4 ultimate is 4g
also the n64 was released a long ass time ago before technology had enough headroom to artifically limit performance in software like the 3ds does for compatability's sake
as i said, enabling new 3ds features on old 3ds games causes problems at least 10-20% of the time

That's still 80% to 90% times that things work well. So basically what happened with the expansion pack.

Anyway my point was that the New 3DS/2DS has hardware as powerful as the Vita or at least close enough.

Yet software for it has not been updated in ages.

Unfortunately, the Vita emulators have access to more virtual ram on the Vita so that means that with the right tweaks they are going to perform better.

Let's agree to disagree, okay? This has got completely derailed.

The GPU doesn't stand a chance against the Vita one but CPU is pretty comparable due to the low clock speed on the Vita.

What exactly is source code? Why is it important?
A program's source code is compiled to produce binary code (or simply "binaries") that is distributed to end users. A binary can be "disassembled" into machine-language code that can be potentially modified and re-assembled, but a "disassembly" is typically very difficult to work with. Source code, on the other hand, typically has labels and names and comments so that the original programmers could easily make changes to it – and so anyone else who wants to make changes to the program can benefit greatly from having the source code. (Of course, sometimes source code is also poorly-written and can be difficult to work with.)

In any case, this thread is a year old and if something surprising was going to develop from this leak, it would have happened already.

Everything you see on the Nintendo 3DS’ screen from the moment you press the power button is compiled source code.

I wouldn’t say nothing significant will come from this leak though. Given some time, someone with the right skills determination may eventually come along and surprise us all.
